Eh, the Old Testament is a non-monotheistic document, it explicitly recognizes other gods. And there is a break between the worship of El and of Yahweh. But Yahweh took all of El's worshippers, and then convinced them that there is only one god... and about half the world has followed along. Like I say, it was an amazing coup. The "don't say my name, and anyway you don't need to because there aren't even any other gods to distinguish me from by name" thing was pure genius.

That's what's called doctrine disagreement and taking a side, damns you. Just like picking a priesthood.
One could also use the argument that a cleric is just a non magic healer, or a clerk, sorta like todays medical doctor... while a priest can use spells, but that's a hole so deep it's not worth going into. Why... cause there's magic in D&D. And doctors today also use the magic of their brain to solve most problems and thus can "heal" people.
If you go with the Marvel's principle of magic: Just a technology yet unexplained.
