In the news today, melee weapons can be made limited-use. For this the Melee ability needs to have a definite number of charges. When the weapon is swung, then one charge will be expended, whether the weapon hits or not. The "When Used Up" field can give more options for what to do with the weapon when it runs out of charges - destroy it or replace with another. There is also the option of letting the weapon recharge on rest.

For example, this sword +3 has 15 strikes a day; it recharges, but if it is pushed beyond the last charge, it will deteriorate to a +2 sword.

Needless to say, this is a straight road to having weapons that wear out with time.

Well, do you understand that within the creation such as this, there will be problems with stores... Aka do you know of this? As stores can be set to recharge items to resell them, it will create unfortunate side effects. And when you sell an item with a different change count, they will have a different price than one with more or less, if the store has non zero "Depreciation rate"... which can unfortunately be exploited. Which is why items with multiple changes are not used.

Now, I am not saying that you can't make this work. You just ought to know that what's there, and already known.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

As long as only blacksmiths are allowed to buy weapons, you can treat it as repairing the worn out item for the difference in cost.

Well, this idea is just something that came to me. The broader thing, making all weapons wear out, I'm going to leave to others, who are into weapon mods. I'll just use the limited-charge case for some special swords, maybe. But people might be interested to know that I made this wearing-out effect work for armor, too. With the "Drain item charges" effect. Now, I don't know how to prevent this draining from affecting other items, like wands, or accept and present this in an attractive way, but the method to giving armor charges is to make a suit "Magical" in the properties and create a Magic-type ability. It doesn't need to do anything, only carry charges, and the button for it can be tucked away into "Reserved." That gives the suit charges, which can then be drained with a Self-directed While Equipped repeating EFF, to simulate gradual wearing out. That will drain the sword, too, though. Not necessarily a problem, if you consider this as a general effect of time on everything, and if the interval is slow enough. Actual magical stuff could have x5 or x10 more charges.

It's up for grabs.
