I've decided I wanted to play the original Baldur's series on my windows 8.1 64 bit setup. I've tried repeatedly to install and run with no luck. I've run as admin, different compatibility modes, made sure that direct play was checked in legacies in windows features. I've made sure that it's not installed in program files folders. I even tried to install in safe mode and nada. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. I would even play on windows 10 if that's possible!

I keep a copy of all the IE variants on my computer for Tweaks testing; I've no problem running the original (with and without TotSC) on Windows 10. Are you getting a specific error message?

Why is this Hypnotoad video so popu... ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

I haven't tried windows 10, on 8.1 when I tried to play, I get the blue spinning circle for a few seconds and then nothing.

None of those are needed.
What might be, that your Operation System might mishandle the original expansion, official patches and configuration information, if it's installed in the wrong directory. For Windows 8.1 .
So where did you install the game into ?
" original Baldur's series " doesn't mean a thing, without actually describing what that is. Is it the BG2:SoA (and ToB), BG1 (+ TotSC), BG1:"Original Saga" or similar things.

I created a folder in my local drive "All BG Games" not in either program files folder. Within that two separate folders labeled BG1 and BG2. I installed BG1 only with patch 114315. I didn't install TothSC, and I'm wondering if that might be the problem. I didn't want to install the entire series BG1, TotSC,, BG2 and ToB  because I didn't want to waste time if BG1 wouldn't even run.

"local drive", can mean multiple things... what I was asking is the exact path to the folder, say;
C:\Users\The Imp\Games\BG1\ -as an example.
This is the best and today the only place you can install things in the C drive you don't want to be locked under a replace restricted operation system BS. Aka the kids sandbox. Or one can use the other drive letters with having multiple mounted drives or divided drives. As they don't have the hardlock function that is tied to the Operation System drive, in the vain attempt from Mircosoft to keep it "clean" from bad use cases, like viruses etc.

C:\All BG Games\BG1\  is the location.

Yeah, you should probably read this. That's about the location the EE games save their data into on Win10 too, even if you don't install the game into those folders... so.

Cool, thanks. I'm not installing EE games on 8.1 just the originals. I have the EE games installed on Win 10 already.

Yeah, but that's not the point... it was, install the game into C:\Users\<windows user name>\Documents\Games\Baldur's Gate\ -folder for example, and not in restricted folder like you did before.

I've run the originals on Win 8.1 as I recall (a horrible OS BTW as I soon found). I think the only thing special I had to do was turn off User Account Control (UAC), but that applies pretty much to anything from Win 7 onward.

Thing is, if you use the last mentioned folder in my above post, one doesn't need to reduce the effect of the UAC, as you CANNOT "turn it off" anymore, as you can only just set it to the least worst setting. Yeah.

Just so I understand the link you sent, I log on to my PC as admin, but do I install to admin user or the name given to my PC as the user? If I'm reading your posts and the link correctly it's under my PC user. Sorry for the confusion I just don't want to do it twice!

It really shouldn't matter to which user account you log into, the admin or just a regular... you make sure to open up the BG1 CD with right-click and then you right click the SETUP.exe within the CDs folder, which allows you to "run as admin", which has the shied icon attached, in most views.

The install folder as well doesn't actually matter as long as you can access it. Normally the computer only has one user folder and another one for "all users", which is not the recomended install folder, because the idiots in Macrohard Wormdoors don't like it.

And yes, you install the game into C:\Users\"the name given to my PC as the user"\Documents\Games\Baldur's Gate\ -folder.

In Windows 10, the folder is best to be: C:\Users\"the name given to my PC as the user"\Games\Baldur's Gate\ -folder.
