You heard me. I think by changing a few things we could change much of BGII into third edition. Firstly, we, if possible chnage the weapons proficiencies into feats, then change the limits onthe number of *'s perrfeat accordingly. Secondly, the HLA's become skills, and every level you gain some. Every so many levels the character gets a dialogue telling them their stats and asking which they'd like to increase by one (I'm not sure how often this occurs.) At character generation, there would be a less random system of determining the starting stats like in 3rd edition. Probably automatically roll the same numbers every time. The only thing I'm not sure how to do would be multiclassing.

I'm guessing that's the link to Icewind gate. This is meant to be a smaller project and avoid some of the inevitable problems from that.

In BG2 the multiclass/dualclass options are hardcoded in the EXE. For example there's no good way that I've ever heard of to gain two levels as a fighter, then three as a mage and then go back and gain a third level as a fighter or a first level as a thief.

No good way? You mean you've heard of a bad way to do it? That's a lot more than I have!

The only things I really like about 3E are the simpler mechanics in combat, fewer racial restrictions for classes, and the multiclassing. Since (to my knowledge) none of that can be modded, 3E just isn't appealing to me. Trying to change BG2 into 3E would take a truly insane amount of work, wouldn't be able to fix the few things I think should be fixed, and would introduce a whole lotta 3E crap that I don't like. If you want to take it on then go for it, but you might do better modding IWD1 or 2 to include the BG2 plot. It would be faster. ;)

Don't forget that IWD1 and 2 have no support for joinable NPC's, which takes out most if not all of the BG2 storyline. I believe this is Weimer's biggest concern at the mo. ;)

Ah, I'd forgotten that. I never could make it through either game, so they didn't leave much of a lasting impression. Heck, I only bought them so I'd have their files handy for modding.
