I was thinking that this might be an interesting question. I've seen a few Monk mods floating around over the years, and I've noticed that non-lawful monks appear to be the rule rather than the exception. So, in your opinion, why do modders tend to go for non-lawful monks?

I don't know why they do it. Like you, I had noticed that it was done. I disagree with it in general. I think that monks ought to be lawful, as a rule. But then, I did not make a monk mod!

My own NPC is NE.

All I can imagine is that people got tired of lots of Good characters and they just manifested themselves as monks.

Dunno

how come you always look so damn cool in every photo I see you in?!?

Speaking of modding, I listened to IER 3 yesterday, so you can have another quote for your signature: how come you sound so damn cool, as well as look it? It's unfair. Seriously.

In that case, why not a Lawful Evil monk?

It just goes to show you how many people think Lawful = law abiding, rather than what it's really supposed to be, i.e. disciplined, ordered, etc. A monks must be disciplined, ordered, etc, otherwise he isn't a monk.

Ha! I defy you, BobTokyo! My monk NPC Yikari is LN! TBG is down, and the file-cap is too small so I can't post him on this thread.

I am trying to think up some banters for Yikari. If anyone would like to help, pls drop me a line!

monk is as close as I can get as a fist fighter.... but also many instances monks have "fell out" of the order...

also... a monk... IMO should be somewhat balanced
enlightenment is based on cosmic oneness not.... strict regimines
Crayons are the most chaotic bananas there never will be....

But the regime is a spiritual and mental regime of discipline, not an insitution of laws.

Xaositect_Crayon: what you're describing is how a real life eastern (Buddhist) monk lives. However, while D&D monks may employ the kind of fighting styles eastern monks employ, their codes of conduct, lifestyle, etc are far closer to western (Christian) monks, who most certainly do have an extremely strict regime. A "spiritual character based on cosmic oneness" in D&D would be something like the mystic.

Mongose87: As I already mentioned, Lawful does NOT = law abiding. Sure, Lawful people are more likely to be law abiding, but really it means self disciplined, ordered, focused, predictable etc. If it helps, pretend it's Order vs. Chaos instead of Lawful vs. Chaotic.

Ninjas are cool. And by cool, I mean totally sweet. If they read this thread, they would go out & kill everybody in your town. I read it!

I look at monks much the same way I look at paladins. I never understood why a paladin had to be lawful good especially if the patron diety wasn't. Likewise why does a monk have to be lawful to be disciplined? Why can't order be found in chaos? I do it everyday. Posted Image Basically I think it comes down to a philosophical following. However, I'll admit most of the monks I play are lawful unless there's a really good reason why they are not.
