I've got the 4 CD edition, and have installed the patch.

The error says something about F:\Torment\Source\baldur\InfScreenLoad.cpp in line 1522.

I'm using Windows XP, have tried comptability mode. Didn't have any trouble with Baldur's Gate. The only thing I can think of is that I'm playing the game from image files using Daemon Tools because, like my BG1 and 2, I've got them damaged because back in the day these things were totally unreliable where I live. I've actually had to burn the BG2 CD from a friend. Anyway, I never got around to playing it and now that I want to, I can't.

Might be a corrupt savegame - how many different ones have you tried?

In their list of BG2 Assertion Errors, Bioware says:

InfScreenLoad.cpp at line 1492
Corrupt portrait bitmap. Go into the directory of the save game that is giving this error and delete all the .bmp files. Load the game and then re-save.

As that's not BG2, and the line is different, I wouldn't give too much on that "portrait bitmap" thing, but as a general impression, it seems to be caused by corrupt data.
Clean the cache of PS:T, try another savegame, or re-install, I'd say.
