I play morrowind on 1280x960 (or whatever it is) and get about 15 fps at max in-game visibilty. Now I was wondering, what is likely to be making this low on the following system:
P4 2.8 ghz
1024mb DDR (400) RAM
GeForce FX 5600 256mb
Im assuming it is the graphics card, but im just wondering...
Morrowind performance

Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.

Save money by buying a x800xt?? Those are about $400 MORE
I do see, however, that you can make a 9800 pro appear as a 9800 xt with some drivers. Will this make it RUN like the XT or just appear that way?

Lol, yeah I would have to. Problem is, I dunno if I want to pay almost twice the price if im not going to get twice the performance from it...

Im having the exact same problem, the game is normally around 15fps.
My system is no slouch aswell: AMD XP 2600+, FX5900 @ Ultra Speeds, 512 MB Ram DDR333. If I can play Doom 3 at high/ultra setting then why is this game performing so low?

Because MW's engine isn't optimized for the highest possible performance, to allow for the current plugin system.
A lot of pre-defining lines of sight and clipping invisible objects etc. that is common in shooter game levels to max out performance can't be done in MW, because the layout of the "level" can change anytime with the addition of some plugin. You basically have to render everything in-game, you can't determine level layout and visibility beforehand.
However, I run MW on a 1 GHz machine, 384 MB RAM, with a Radeon 7200 card (32 MB), and I get between 8 and 12 FPS in Balmora, view distance about 80%, Shadows off.
