A very dangerous magical ritual. The primary advantage is immortality.

You call immortality an advantage?

Maybe for the first couple hundred years. I wonder if liches can smell... having a rotting corpse would be a incentive not to become a lich, I would think.

I suppose they would just have to hope that their nose will be one of the first things to rot off..........

Vash: "Normally when you buy an old, used bike, you're supposed to repair it before riding it!"
Wolfwood: "Are you dissing my beautiful shiny Angelina II?!?"
Vash: "I'm dissing YOU, not your stupid broken bike!"

It's all happening here

They'd have to be saints to be able to live with that kind of smell...
Hang on a sec, maybe not...
But don't they also get increased magical powers?

Through lightning, travel shadow,
Through hell and all above,
Surviving sword and arrow,
Bound stronger by the love

And in the end a witness,
To where the death has lain,
Silent through the sorrow,
Where innocents lie slain

Undead creatures cannot smell anything, normally. That is not the problem with immortality, though.

They are obsessed withmagic so with their immortality they are able to increase their spell portfolio indefinetly. Won't their brains rot away though making them forget everything? :bash:

It is their souls that keeps absorbing the knowledge. Their body is a mere material shell. This shell loses even more potential and purpose as they advance to Demi-Lich status.

Well the lich under the crooked crane doesnt make much sense then. He turned himself into a lich to rest in a basement forever?!

All of the spellcasters who try this don't prevail. Where do the souls of those who fail, go? Nine Hells or Baator? Or some other not-so-nice-place?

I've heard they can cast spells without pause between casting... but I'm not very sure... <_<

When a lich has gathered enough power it can change to a demi lich trough a ritual. But a one question: Was Kankaxx already a demi lich or did the pieces of his body start the ritual when they were returned to him?

Kangaxx pretty much ignores the demilich rules. Instead of being largely uninterested in the material plane, he's a villain with demilich powers.

I think the guarding liches are a good example for another lich purpose. Memories fade and so does commitment over the centuries.(..'and things that should not have been forgotten, were lost'......) Imagine a paladin holding a holy vigil to protect an artefact. Becoming a lich would also grant him the possibility to watch it forever. Liches can be good, can't they?

Arch-Liches, and some other kind. Not regular liches. Which means that Kagnax's guardians make no sense.

Arch-Liches are quite rare in the Realms nowadays. There were more in the days of the Netheril Empire.
