Minions of chaos, denizens of the lower planes. Imps are some kind of lesser demons because the same ritual that is used to summon more powerful demons (Errtu etc.) is used to summon imps (as proved by Cadderly). Imps do not have much power but albeit minor ones turn invisible etc. Imps are not so common on Toril as though for the more common ones are mephits of the elemental planes and other such planes. In short the imps are lesser demons that are summoned and banished the same as the greater demons and they have spend the 100 years in the Nine Hells before they can get back to Toril, unless someone summons them and allows them to escape their punishment.

Imps are small, relatively weak baatezu. Devils, not demons.

Hmm... but in the R.A. Salvatore's book Servant of the Shard, Cadderly summoned the imp druzil and after Druzil had provided Cadderly with the name of a demon that could give him the information he sought, Druzil added that the demon was stupid in his opinion and when Cadderly banished Druzil he said that he would tell Mizferac what Druzil thought about its intelligence and Druzil feared when he heard those words. Wouldn't this put him in the same place as the Mizferac demon? And if it does, how can imps be devils?

Imps are LE, they are Devils.

It is possible the book is wrong - FR authors can be. Or it is assumed that the reader would not know the difference between a LE Imp and a CE Quasit. Or the Imp gave the name of a demon to annoy that demon, or something.

Feanor - you do realize that the various 2e books are still available on-line? It would take much less time to simply buy and read...

According to the 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual, the CE Quasit is actually a type of Imp. Mephits, which can be any evil alignment, are apparently a type of Imp as well.

Bah! 2E? Lies! :D

They are all essentially the same sort of thing - small humanoid with wings and maybe a tail - so I can see how you could group them like that.

Well, Xander, it's not so simple. First, are available online IF you have a creditcard. Second, if you ask the question in a forum, you usually receive much more references than you could get from those books or from some online manual (which just summarize, btw). ;)

If imps are devils, then how could Bhaal have had an imp as a butler in the Abyss ? Or Cespenar is not an imp ?

Bhaal was LE, BioWare messed up. :) He shouldn't really have been in the Abyss at all.
