When a spell indicates the caster needs to make a strength check or fall prone, what does it really represent? I need a bit more insight on this.

In BG2, you could either do it as a save versus Breath Weapon, or some kind of custom roll of STR or less on 1d20

I am shooting for an AD&D one. I don't trust BG2 as an AD&D source. You all know those notorious reasons. ;)

Well, stat checks were never 100% official in 2nd ed as far as I remember, but I'm not an expert anymore. Been a long time.

I'd transfer it over as a roll of stat or less on a D20 in 2nd ed, or a save vs. breath for STR and Dex, vs. Spell for will.

I am not sure what you are referring to, but I am familiar with the concept of stat checks in AD&D. (I still play it once a week!) A Str check does mean rolling less than (or equal to) the character's Str score on a d20.
