Transitional Flaws

I'm considering what I think of the concept of a transition. As such, I'd like to see problems with the idea of merging BG1 and BG2 rather than keeping them as separate installs discussed here. (Anyone else care in the slightest?)

- Story inconsistencies, eg. BG2 starting NPCs, Gorion/Alianna backstory.
- Style inconsistencies, eg. NPC voicing, delivery of dreams.
- Interface ugliness. BG1 must be accessed through the tutorial button.
- Forces continuity of features which may have been better off different between the games. Examples include: menu art, walking speeds, spell system.
- Forces merging of wordmaps. Consequently also forces discarding of BG1-style worldmap in favour of BG2-style throughout.
- Only one game's PC biography can be used.

I think the only serious problem is Imoen's/Minsc's/Jaheira's roles, since they are essentially a part of BG2's beginning. What to do with these three is a mystery.



Others:

- NPC mods can be added earlier/later, preferably separately.

- I, personally, am fine with BG2 interface, spells and walking speeds, but then again, a (D0)tweak mod could be introduced.

- To me, having BG1 biography thoughout the game is a minor thing, but Tamoko's fate(did she die? if not, can I tell Sarevok in ToB?) and having different dreams (I know that virtually nothing can be done about it, but it _feels_ wrong to have one kind of dreams in BG1 and then - completely different visualisation in BG2) bothers me much more.

- a "Help" note after Sarevok's defeat: "You now can alter your biography however you wish" could help... albeit a little.

- I love tutorial section, but I'd live without it, if I could play BG1 and BG2 without having to install/uninstall something, like in TUTU, and with better graphics than in BGT.

- Gorion/Alianna is a tricky bit. My PC is seeing red when they think of Gorion sleeping with their mother, however ruthless she was. (And I like Turnabout texts, too, but that's a minor point). Others may prefer BG1 version, though. So, I would leave it as it is - or think really, really, really hard.

Basically: give me the opportunity to play BG1, stop and switch to BG2. Without installing/uninstalling anything. Then again to BG1. Give me BG1's globals in BG2. The story will come around.

Yeah, I noticed that when I played Throne of Baal. I remember reading the Scroll that Gorion Gave you which said that Gorion was friends with Alianna. And then only to be told that she was a Priestess of Baal who was killled by the Harpers :blink:

It's also interesting to note that the Solar speaks trying to tell you of your past, but most of it you would already know through Gorion's letter.

Hmm, What do you mean? I'm not entirely sure.

If this can be updated or tweaked or however, yes that would be good.

Speaking of style inconsistencies, no mod has ever accomplished this:

- for Imoen/Jaheira/Minsc/Edwin/Viconia - to have the same (preferably BG2) portraits and colours(paperdolls) throughout the saga.
(I'd like to see the same for mod NPCs, i.e. Talon's Xan, Domi's Kivan, but this is another story entirely.)

BG1 NPC Project introduces BG2 portraits to BG1, but never changes the paperdolls. BGT uses BG1 colour distribution. (Dream Imoen, who turns into a statue and shatters, wearing _pink_? No, thanks.)

Speaking of portraits and continuity,

is it possible to have BGT-WeiDu (and the Merger, in the future) use the same kind of portrait during the whole saga ?

I don't even know if it does that now actually since I never got to play it.

If it was possible (and I believe it's even pretty easy), I'd like to see the portraits from BG1 carried over to the BG2 section of the game for those joinable NPCs that you can meet later. In my opinon it'd be much better than see the opposite (like almost the whole static grafic, BG2's portraits are inferior to the BG1's ones...).
