I'll bet you it's a conflict between this one and some of the others. Most of those mods don't even touch Cromwell.

The text is from the Chosen of Cyric component of RR (you are using an old version of APACK which is what RR used to be called). See what Avenger has to say, RR has forums here at SHS. I'm guessing that you've just got a screwy install since this text certainly shouldn't appear here and I've never had trouble with that component and Cromwell. You can try uninstalling it. APack is an old version of RR and you have it installed very early (the old version should be installed nearly last as IIRC, the new version has very detailed installation instructions in the readme). The latest version of RR is 3.8, I think.

Okay, no. Replacing APack with the RR mod did not work. This just plain bites.

Missed that comment, but here is the real kicker. This was a new install and all the mods were installed only once, so while your idea has merit, it is not the problem. As a matter of fact, I specifically did a new install on the game because I had this problem before.

Missed that comment, but here is the real kicker. This was a new install and all the mods were installed only once, so while your idea has merit, it is not the problem. As a matter of fact, I specifically did a new install on the game because I had this problem before.

What are you using as your Fixpack? Baldurdash or BG2 Fixes?

The only mods in that list that touch Cromwell are Underrepresented Items and Item Upgrade... I'm not barring the others from possibility, but I would suspect that it's one of those. Do any of the mods there replace files instead of patching?

Other than the standard BG2 patch, I do not use one unless it is included in a mod. In all my years of playing I have never had this problem or needed a fixpack. I also do not think that this requires a fixpack of any sort.

Say, I know you've been installing/uninstalling mods a lot recently. Is there any chance you're using a saved game from an old installation?

The string references for Cromwell are stored in the savedgame, once you encounter him, but if you make a fresh installation, with new mods, or mods in different order, the string references will not match the strings, so you get weirdness like you're seeing. For a party-joinable NPC, you can fix it by using the string-fixer, but this doesn't work on party non-joinables.

There is a way to test this: start a new game, and see if the strings are still scrambled. If so, your best bet is to reinstall and start over with a new game, I'm sorry to say.

Hey hon! Thanks for the suggestions. This is actually my "fun" install and is on a different computer from the "Mod Testing" install. *sigh* Something just got screwy somewhere I suppose. I did uninstall the APack and replace it with the RR mod, but I used a saved game where I had already met Cromwell. I will try an earlier game and if that does not work, well, I am almost to ToB anyway.

Yeah, it was probably the APack/RR switch. Which is a bummer, but at least there aren't too many characters you'll have to talk to a second time, apart from Cromwell. Oh, well. At least ToB will work out OK for you!
