hi all.

I have an "old" computer next to my Vista system computer, a computer that has lots of free space on its hard drive, unlike my Vista computer's hd.
This old computer has windows 98se as an operating system, I had tried various installs of Easy TUTU and modded bg2, before and the Weidu installed the mods ok, then.

However the Big World, including the fixpack which is supposed to be usable by itself even if Big World is not used,
is apparently utterly not compatible with win98se!

here are the posts that Dabus, and others, have made, on the "big world setup" thread: I wanted to "Flag" this win98se info in a dedicated post, so that people can see it better, otherwise the info might get lost in the big world setup thread!

Ah, just since I read it once again:
Maybe it's the cmd and the directory-names itself.
"Dos" had this C:\progra~1 - names when you wanted to access them.
Maybe Win98 cannot handle full fledged names which stringlenth is longer than 8.

Would be fitting.

The Fixpack batch program uses some features that are only available when commandline extensions are enabled.
I'm not sure, but it might be that it's only supported by the NT line of Windows (NT, 2000, XP, ...).

Does not look like to be an easy fix for this! probably *each* command line for each program action, has this problem.

I could not even get the programs to read the filenames.

So I will have to wait till I have more room on my vista machine, I guess.

At least there is that huge install list, the pdf file, for the correct install order, maybe I can get a 80% of a "big world"
for bg2 plus Tob.

...

So if you have two computers... why not use the other(the Vista one) to use the BiG World Setup, and then copy the whole game(it's directory to the other computer) after it's done all the processes that are needed?
PS, you don't have to actually use the BWS to install the BWP, as the manual install package is the content of this.bat installers + this + the mods.

As stated above, the Batch will not work with Win95/8.
But the copy and paste should work, if you got enough space and an option to transfer the files somehow.
THINK! - It's not illegal.

Why not free some space from your main computer or buy another hard drive?

hmmm...

I had given this a thought. But what stopped me from doing this is several smallquestions.

If I had to install both games on my vista hd, then placed the mods plus installer in my Folder for bg2, then installed this all, then copied over, what about the registry entries that are in the vista registry?!
As i would be transfering to a win98se system, I wonder if this is doable?! to play without registry entries. I *have* used programs that have no registry entries, before.
If I just placed the mods and installers *in* an empty folder, then installed, then there are no registry entries. but surely the Game[s]
are needed also: if there was a way to install without using the games, then I can see that I could do this.

the other post answer wrote about using only the version 7 installers, but the experience that I had, before, was that *all*
of each of the exe executions were invalid, for all of each process in each installer program including the fixpack.

is version 7 win98se compatible? the readme for the new added stuff does not seem to indicate this.

I had just today given a thought to adding a second hard drive to my vista. I could just do that.

or....

download all of the new files for bg2 and do a "manual" install just for bg2, using the pdf file for the order of installs.

thanks...freestone

You do not need a registry entry for the game, you just start the game from the BGMain.exe(not the baldur.exe), and the game starts itself without the front end that would only give you the Install option.

The more important thing is that the two computers have the game in the same directory, because the game exe uses the [Alias]-locations in baldur.ini to know what's where.

download all of the new files for bg2 and do a "manual" install just for bg2, using the pdf file for the order of installs.

But the problem with that is that the BWP installer is needed to correctly use the BWP's Fixpack... because it's not easy to do otherwise.
