I'm playing a straight Baldur's Gate Trilogy install with no mods or add-ons, and I'm wondering if it's safe to use a savegame editor like Shadowkeeper. I only want to tweak a few things like proficiencies, spells, classes, etc. But I'm starting from BG1, and I'm worried that Shadowkeeper will screw up all the plot states and triggers and whatnot.

If the Shadow Keeper doesn't give you a notice that it detects an error, it should be safe... as long as you do not overwrite the old save... and as the Shadow Keeper doesn't overwrite by default, it's all good.

But if I were to edit a save and play on with it, the game won't be horribly broken and unfinishable?

Let me answer it this way.

But if I were to edit a characters attributes like proficiencies, spells, and/or classes in a save and play on with it, will the game be fine with those changes so it doesn't become horribly broken and unfinishable for those reasons?

Yes. :D
