I got the 2 baldur's gate games from GOG. which mods you recommend to install, also in order to improve compatibility for windows 7 x64? should I use the compatibility kit thing also recommended for planescape torment?

There are many threads on which mods to install including over at gog's forums
I would say: just grab something called "BiG World Setup" and pick from the list offered therein
