Greetings and thanks for all of your hard work.

I recently installed BG1/BGII ala GOG and everything went well. Then I installed BGT, (and other mods) as instructed by this site and followed the instructions precisely except I did not install the widescreen mod.

No errors showed.

After creating a character and trying to enter the world the games crashes creating no error log. Repeated attempts yield the same results.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

Does anyone here know what is causing this crash?

If not, then a pointer would help.

You installed the mods into the BGII - SOA folder I hope? If so, go into that folder and look towards the bottom for a file called weidu.txt. You'll need to post a copy of it here so folks can figure out what's going on :lol2: .

Nope, because that's a horrible guide to follow... and because your game is not actually writing down the error it produces.

K, to get the error logging, go to the game folder and open the file called "baldur.ini" with Notepad, and under the [Program Options] section in the file, make a new line and type in 'Logging On=1' (without the '' quotes, unless the line is already there)... Save the file and exit... rest is in my signature...

And when you made the BGT install was there any mods installed into the BG1 game directory, cause the instructions might mislead you to believe that you can do that, you can¨t as the BG1 folder needs to be the vanilla BG1 game with the TotSC and it's patch installed on it, nothing more. The BG1 mods spoken in the guide need to be the BGT versions of them and they are actually installed to the BG2 folder after the BGT. And no, the BG1 Fixpack is not a mod for BGT'ed BG2 game, the BGT itself makes the corrections it needs to. The only thing that could be installed is a textual translation patch for the BG1...

..., go into that folder and look towards the bottom for a file called weidu.txt.

The files name is actually Weidu.log ... yeah, open up that file with Notepad too and copy pate the text to the reply( via the " Ctrl + V " to write it into the post).

OK. If I understand you correctly I have to reverse the installation procedure that I followed on that link caused it's messed up the works.

There were indeed, a lot of mods listed on that site... most of which were to be installed prior to installing BGT.

If the above quoted error log does not lead to a quick solution then I'm probably better off uninstalling the mods... or maybe everything... and starting again from scratch with a fresh install of GOG's BG1/BGII.

First, I'll await your reply(s).

BTW, I don't know if the administrator of this site is reading this forum, but the E-mail server that is tied in with it, is on at least two blacklists.

I had to disable of few of my SPAM Filter subscription to get the validation E-mail through.

Just FYI...

Yeah, I'll tell you how to install them... and link them too.
Uninstall the both games, and then remove the game directories, then reinstall, and if the installed gives a choice, always choose the most space requiring ones. The middle step is very important.
After you have installed the games and add-ons, install the patches, there's no need to install the middle BG1(the one without the TotSC patch) as the BGII SoA patch(again without the ToB, as these are actually within the add-ons). So the patches version numbers that you need to install are 5512 or 5521 to the BG1, and 26498 or 26499 to the BG2. - This is if you don't own the GOG version in which case just skip this.

Then you install all these mods to your BG2 directory in the following order: BG2 Fixpack, BGT-weidu, BG1 UB(yeah, it install differently into the BG2 folder than to BG1, as it's programmed to see what to do). And then rest of the above list.
And as you have not installed the BG2 Tweaks "faster chapter 1 & 2 dialog" tweak, Do not install that.

Hmm, did you enable the subtitles in the BG2 game ? Cause this might be just be the straw that brakes the camels back, not the actual problem.

OK. There you go. You hit the nail right on the head with that one; I had subtitles turned on. I would never had suspected that as being the culprit.

Now, it loads, (no crashes), and I find myself outside of CandleKeep. Am I right in saying that this is where BG I starts? (I don't want to start in BG II).

If so, then before I continue and waste my time, can you, (or anyone else), think of any reason why the game would not be playable, (through to the complete end), at this point? I don't want to go ahead playing my character only to find that it's borked later on, because of a messed up install.

Is there any test I can perform to check this out?

And one more thing; Is there any real improvement gained by installing the Widescreen mod? or does it just swap out one problem for another?

Hmm, outside of Candlekeep, that would be bad, but I think you talk about the Candlekeep Inn, and the whole first map is the Candlekeep(castle).

Well, of tests, I have no idea, but there sure are some crash trials... but I have no source of them to give, personally, so someone else needs to give that.

Well, you can see the main view of the game more if you wish, and you can set your exact resolution as long as it's bigger than 640x480:

From the original completely working 1024x768.

To for example 1920x1200. PS; zoom in.

CandleKeep Inn... that's right. So that's the beginning of BG I then... where I need to be.

OK, but the BG Config gives a few extra resolutions above the basic 640 x 480;
  • 1024 x 768
  • 1280 x 960
  • 1600 x 1200

Of course 1600 x 1200 is not a widescreen resolution... but 1280 x 960 is.

I tried the Widescreen mod with PS Torrment, (I stopped playing it early on when cannibalism was a mundane thing... one does not need that mental garbage in one's head), set at 1920 x 1200 and it was very difficult to see things on the ground... and interaction with the game became tedious. I dropped it back to 1680 x 800, (IIRC), and that was still a bit much.

But other problem was with the interface being too small for quick and smooth gameplay operation.

I was wondering if Widescreen did the same thing with BGI & II or if the interface remained more or less in proportion and useful. From you picture(s), (thank-you), it seems that it might still be useful at 1920 x 1200, so I think I'll give it a try.

Any other mods that you would recommend before I embark? 8)

OK, but the BG Config gives a few extra resolutions ..
1280 x 960
1600 x 1200

Yeah... but those two don't actually work correctly, as they can crash the game if you equip the two handed weapon for example, with the Widescreen mod, the game works, flawlessly.

The 1280 x 960 is actually a normal large TV resolution... you can test this by dividing the former with the later and you get 4:3=1.3333, while the widescreen is 16:10=1.6 or 16:9=1.777.
PS, the 1680's other resolution is x 1050, not x 800. If you want the game have the widescreen resolution, then you need to know what resolutions your monitor can use, to find that out, just right click the your desktop, and there's an option to set resolution that gives your current option for windows, the game uses different once, but you need to use one of the options there, or it will look distorted.

Well, you as you can set the resolution yourself, you get your choices. The thing to keep in mind is that the mod was made originally for BGII, so the PST's and BG1's & IwD 1&2 were secondary and the interface in those are not actually centered unless you use a GUI mod that requires the Widescreen mod to be installed to a set resolution.

Well, not really, but you probably should know your options, like using the BWS, here's a FAQs for it, it gives you the ability to install about 400 mods, each having their own components individually picked by you, if you pick a compilation and then proceed to the "..." next to the compilation setting.

That's some good info; Thanks.

I installed Widescreen at 1440 x 900 and it looks fine to me... for now.

One problem; There is no Dialogue Text showing. Text from the game itself is there in the dialogue windo, but not the dialogues when talking with an NPC, so no interaction with them is possible.

Nothing shows in the error log(s).

Any pointers?

Any pointers?

After installing all the mods, did you start a new game ? As the saves have this problem usually.
Other than that, you will probably be better of by reinstalling, correctly this time, and check out the edit to the above message.

OK. I think I understand everything. This is what I have done so far.

I installed the GOG versions of BG I and BG II in that order.

Then I started the games to initialize the config files. I did not create any characters.

Then I installed BG2 Fixpack.

Then I installed BGT. (Note: I did not BIFF my files.)

Then I installed BG1 UB into the BG II folder, not the BG 1 folder.

Now I'm going to install WideScreen.

If I'm still on the right track then it's time to install whatever mods I want, using BWS?

Is all of that correct?

Nope, all those mods and the 394 other mods are included in the BWS process, as it's a setup tool to download and install every BG2 mod it's maker know that exist and can be made to compatible with each others... its optional to use it or not, and I would only encourage to use it if you want to install many more mods or so called mega mods.

I understand that BWS is optional. (I intend to use it.) 8)

I just wanted to confirm my install order as being correct... and that it's now safe to proceed to BWS.

Well, you'll need a clean and patched BG2 install for the BWS... so the answer is still, Nope. :P

If I understand you correctly, GOG's BG I & II comes with all the patches already.

In a previous message you said the order is "BG2 Fixpack, BGT-weidu, BG1 UB"...

At what point should BWS be installed?

It's not installed, it's extracted and then used to create the mod-ed game from the mod-less game. So before the BG2 Fixpack.

OK.

I have restarted everything.

BTW, BWS installs BG2 Fixpack & BGT-weidu for you, so really one only needs BWS.

I'll post any problems that show up.
