The herbalism thread gave me an idea. Seeing as how druids, even if herbalism would be implimented, druids would still not have enough HLA to use for leveling up. So i was thinking that they could get woodland creatures that act similar to a wizard familar, but not the same (as they aren't familiars (like a pixie or something, ie woodland, ocean, etc. spirits (perhaps the spirit would determined based on where you are, although this being a HLA type deal it should have a selection to chose from atleast, if its still even based on where you're at). By this time in pnp 2nd edition they would usually have a few and i think giving them one would be a good addition (and esp since we're low on their HLAs also)
These wouldn't add hp or the like, like familars do as they aren't bound in the same way. They would be controllable and have special abilities, etc, including penalties if you let them die These would otherwise be though like permenant summonings.

I like the idea, but would it tread on the Beastmaster kit at all?

Well, in PnP, Druids and Rangers would have some animal companions. It would be worth mentioning, however, that so would a rogue, priest, fighter, a Paladin would have his warhorse...
I'm not sure how much animals would add at thatpoint in the game. I think they would all die off rather quickly. By that time, you would be deep into Watcher's Keep, probably around the Elven City. I think the Golems and Demons would trash any critters you had running around. The druid could spend her time herding them about, but that would probably detract from gameplay. Perhaps some other force of nature, like a shambling mound or something.
Besides, I don't think she would allow her critters to accompany her down into the Tree of Life. She would not wish them to be endangered, like any good tree hugger. That is just my take.
On another side note, it seems almost everyone loves the concept and image of druids, but almost everyone ususally plays something else. Wierd. And you know, in the original AD&D, you used to have to dual class to Druid before you could become a Bard...

While adding animal companions to druids/rangers would be a good idea, creating familiar-type creatures requires MUCH and very detailed work. I doubt at the moment that we would want to get into such trouble because of a single HLA.
Talking about familiars, a HLA that would improve the mage's existing familiar is more likely to become reality in the upcoming versions.

Well animals would not nessarily be good for HLA companions...i'm talking more about spirits, fae, sprites, etc.
But i didn't think this would be something that would be in v2...maybe v3 or v4.

Well i'm not talking undead here, but natural spirits, such as dryads, nixies, etc.
