Except one: don`t install the Firemoth plugin, instead search for the Expanded one. Err.. Check out the list of mods in the pinned thread I made, you`ll find it there.

If you have a good computer, I`d recommend the following things as essential (search with Google or at the Morrowind Mod Summit):
- Abigail`s Petshop (by Abigail)
- Adul`s Weapon Addos (various ones by Adul)
- Adjustable Magicka Regen (by GlassBoy)
- Advanced Herbalism (by andoreth)
- Assassin`s Armory (by HelioS)
- Atmospheric Sound Effects 3.0 + updates (by Duncan)
- Baldurdash Text Patch (By Kevin Dorner) -- Yeah, Morrowind has one too
- Balmora Retextured (by Qarl)
- Bank Mod (by Indestructible & Kir)
- Better Bodies (by PsychoDog Studios)
- Better Heads (by Gorg, Arathrax and Motoki)
- Cait`s Critters Unleashed (by Hoghead)
- Classical Monsters Replacer (by Khalazza)
- Complete Morrowind 1-4 (Cooking, Sewing, Pottery, Woodcutting)
- Creature Pack (by Mephisto)
- Daggerfall Book Collection (Launcelot)
- Dracandro`s Voice (by Dracandros)
- Enhancement Colors De-Enhancer (by Evil Sorcerer)
- Experience Cap Remover (by Mephisto)
- Firemoth Expanded (by Slowride)
- Fishing Academy (by MADMAX)
- FPS Optimizer (by Alexander)
- Gardeners of Morrowind (by Angry Porcupine)
- Hooded Robe Collection (by jdooby)
- Key Replacer (by Daduke)
- Landscape remix (by Albedo)
- Living Cities of Vvardenfell (by HelioS)
- Marksman Mod (by intelligentsia)
- McAsmod`s Werewolves (by the McAsmod Team)
- Morrowind Advanced (by WormGod)
- Neccessities of Morrowind (by TeamPhoenix)
- NelothsMouth`s Sharpened Clothes (by NelosMouth)
- Nox`s Vampire Enhancements (by Nox)
- Sharpened Weapon Models (by jakethesnake)
- Sil`s Better Argonian Bodies (by Silaria)
- Sir Luthor`s Tools (by SirLuthor)
- Sky Pack (by NOBODY)
- Sri`s Alchemy (by Sri)
- Suran Archery Tradehouse (by WizBang)
- Telvani Retextured (by Qarl)
- Texture Replacers (by Carnajo) -- many of them
- Textured Signs (various ones, choose preferred one)
- The Lighting Mod Complete (by Sensei)
- Traveling Merchants (I don`t remember by who)
- Turtle Addition (by Ty) -- turtles rock :P
- Ultimate Clothing Mod (by Silaria)
- Unique Clothing Mod (by Niero)
- Unofficial Morrowind Patch (by Thepal) -- Like the Baldurdash Fixpack
- Various Faces (by Khalazza)
- Visual Pack (by Khalazza)
- Wakim`s Game Improvements (edited by intelligentsia)
- Weight Fix (I forgot by whom)
- Wilderness Mod (by PumaMan)
- Wilderness Sounds (by PumaMan)
- Wizard Hats (by Daduke)
- Year Patch (by Spuzzum)

I wouldn`t play Morrowind without these. There are several others, but these are more than essential, in my opinion. GIANTS (by PumaMan) is also a nice addition. Have fun. :)

And don't forget the Japanese House plugin! It was my favorite part of the whole game. Just a tip though, don't wait to long to play just because you're waiting for a mod. I don't know how many times I restarted in order to get no errors from the mods in my game. In the end, it wasn't fun anymore and I just stopped playing. Guess I'll never complete the game. :P

My case is quite extreme though, was waiting for that damned Japanese Castle-mod from Daria which never came out. Aargh it bothers me to this day.

Children of the Night 1 and 2 - Beautiful new areas, a new city, many quests large and small, the best done of the MW romances, and the Copper Corronet in Morrowind.

The Black Queen Chronicles - Quests, romance, betrayal, and a fantastic new "house".

Abandoned Flat - Another house, plus quests and generally good storytelling.

Just go to Morrowind Summit and search for them.
http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/

Here are those I prefer at the moment:

Fair Magicka Regeneration (the slowest of the four choices)
Questfix (bug-fixes)
Enchantment Color Deenhancer
MultiMark
Landscape Remix (improved textures)
Gladiator
Animal Behaviour
Beastrace Tweak
Juniper's Twin Lamps
Landtex (more improved textures)
Real signposts
Female cuirasses
Morrowind Sound Enhancement
Best of naked Morrowind :)
Sri's Alchemy something
and a small mod I made with spell balancing and other tweaks

Best of naked Morrowind :)

Rock on! :P Btw, is LandTex available at the Morrowind Summit?

Ziggy, check the pinned thread titled 'Comprehensive mod list'. Links are there.

The ones Bob suggested are great too! I haven`t tried Children of the Night 2 yet, it`s a huge download (for me).

I am planning to install morrowind once I got the mods I want for it but I have a question though, does the firemoth expanded contain the official plugin or do I have to install them both?

A selection of my current list (somewhat sorted):

Bugfixing:
Morrowind Patch v1.6.2.esm

Atmospherics/Graphics:
Khalazza Visual Pack: texture replacer.
Better Heads.esm, Better Heads Bloodmoon addon.esm, Better Heads Tribunal addon.esm: NPC face replacer.
Unique Heads I-Balmora.esm: Unique heads for most NPCs in Balmora.
Better Bodies.esp: What it says. Includes nudity or not.
AtmosphericSoundEffects-3.0-Tribunal.esp: general nice sound FX.
DaedricSignposts.esp: Readable Signposts in Daedric. :D I made the colours less bright on this one. You might try Real Signposts if you're not into learning a new alphabet. ;)
VoiceAddons.esp: combining four inofficial voice addons: Dagoth Gares, Vivec, Almalexia and Barilzar (the last two from Tribunal).
P.R.E. v4.0.esp: More variety of NPC answers when you persuade them. Nicely done.
Key Replacer Trib & BM.esp: Replaces the standard keys with more elaborate ones and adds variety.
Windows Glow.esp: Windows are lighted at night; interior windows are bright at day.
RheddHeads_combine.esp: My combined plugin of Rhedd's heads for the PC.
IceBradyRobeReplacerMW.esp, IceBradyRobeReplacerTB.esp, IceBradyRobeReplacerBM.esp: replaces female robes with a new model, and all special robes with nice textures.

Quest Plugins:
TheBlackMill.esp: Huge. And good. And else.
Juniper's Twin Lamps (1.1 Tribunal).esp: A classic about the anti-slavery guild. (Note: I'm not playing Telvanni at the moment. :D)
Illuminated Order: Stunning. Best for mages.
Sorefoot Enterprizes, Inc..esp: Travel company with quests.
Beyond YsGramor: Something for higher level characters, really good quest about an anti-slavery guild.

Official:
entertainers.esp
master_index.esp: IMHO really important - an additional way to fast-travel.
AreaEffectArrows.esp: Nice, maybe slightly overpowered.
EBQ_Artifact.esp

General Tweaks and stuff:
NighttimeDoorLocks-LD 1.1a.esp: Locks doors at night.
Sixth House Advanced 2.1.esp: Slightly stronger 6th House people.
indybank-NoHouses.esp: A bank plugin. Not that you'd need one, but it's nice to have around.
Nerevarine Wears Ordinator Armor.esp: What it says.
lgnpc_Khuul.esp, lgnpc_AldVelothi.esp, lgnpc_SN.esp: "Less Generic NPC" Project, atm only for those three towns available.
Uvirith Unleashed: Stronghold expansion (only inside) for Telvanni - the only House that matters. :D

General link list:
Telesphoros' List, updated 01. 07., at the ES forums.

Call me ignorant, but in your opinion what is wrong with the official Firemoth plugin? It could just be good fortune on my part, as I have not noticed or suffered any bugs while using it (not that that is any assurance).

hehe the only bugs i found in the firemouth plug in were to do with silly npcs ;) so i got bored of the slowness and went off alone and caused some havock lol

The NPCs in Firemoth ? I killed them, as at that stage I found the weapons they carried (daedric dagger and an ebony longsword IIRC) to be of greater use than the 'assistance' of their owners. :)

I only recommended it because it adds stuff, not because it`s more bug-free. :)

I apologise for my prior assumption khayman. 'Tis just that I have heard some.. disconcerting reports re the official firemoth plugin, i.e game destroying bugs. Not that bugs are an uncommon thing for plugins really. Thanks for clarifying. :)

Mods im playing with currently (a rather small list, I know. I wanna finish the game before I try anything big)
Tribunal/Bloodmoon obviously...
NPC Replacer (makes all the NPCs have the improved heads you can download)
Potion sorter (renames all the potions so they are sorted better)
Time 2x (time passes twice as slow)
Vivec expansion (adds some floating platforms to vivec with some npcs)
The Lighting Mod (radically changes the way morrowind is lighted - night is actually dark! You're going to need those torches)
Creature pack (cant actually remember what it does, but hey, it must be good :D I think it does something to creature textures)
Atmospheric Sound Effects (adds hundreds of new sounds and changes exiting ones. This is better then the official patch IMHO)
Landscape Remix (changes a large number of fround textures to look better)
Dodge mod (makes that unarmed armor skill worthwhile by adding a dodge bonus to it which increases as your skill in unarmed increases)
Book of riddles (small mod made by Mer adds a new NPC and quest. Theres a thread aroud here for it)
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.
