I want to start coding interjections for my NPC, but euh....

If I type i.e. --strfind cook or --strfind troll

I get way to many lines back and you can't get back to the lines standing infront of the others because the screen is to small and you can't scroll up as far as I know in MS-DOS prompt.

How am I going to find the strings of the troll cook (Firkraag Dungeon)?

Especially because I also get strings back with the work sweetroll when I use --strfind troll.

How can I make my search more specific?

Please help

You could use another tool, such as DLTCEP or NI.
You could redirect the weidu output to a file, using DOS redirection.
You could switch on the "Show Strref" feature in the game, and then playtill the dialog you want shows up, and take a note of it's strref.

First option unknown to me, please explain in more detail sounds interresting

Second option unknown to me, but that will give a major lot of files rather not

Third option. I know, but that takes a sh*tload amount of time

In short words if you can explain me with either DLTCEP or NI it would be very much appreciated :thumb:

Start DLTCEP. Set it up if you haven't already. Now use Tools->Edit Strings. Click Search. Search.

You can do it by creature too. Just search for the creature name in DLTCEP and see what dialog file it uses. Open up that file, and find the strref.

Infinity Explorer is another great tool to use. It doesn't take nearly as much work to set up, and it's a little easier to browse through. It doesn't do any editing though.

Hehe, the java runtime IS tough unless you already got it.
OOPs, sorry, i thought you talk about NI, my fault.
IE is ok for simple stuff, it is just a bit old.

The main reason I still use IE for some stuff is just that you can scroll through all files of a certain type by clicking a directional key. It's just a little faster. ;) I don't use it for items or spells though, since I like DLTCEPs setup much better.

IE is quite good for just browsing things (loads faster than anything else, and is dead easy to navigate), and imho still not beaten for viewing areas.

For finding the dialogue of a specific creature, I do that with IE, too:
Open its area, look it up under NPCs, go to the AI tab of the creature, and click its dialogue.

Okay I can't find creatures through DLTCEP as the screen that pops up when I do Search -> Creatures I do not understand

I can find strings through Tools->Edit Strings -> Search. Biggest problem with this is that I didn't wrote down the sentences which I want my NPC to interject with. I just know the creatures.

Using IE, who!!! Lovely pictures of Areas. But how do I find the right one quick? And If I check an Area. I do the following. I find the NPC, click on it's cre file, then go to its AI tab. I click on the dialogue. Now I see sentences. Is the index number the string number?

To make it short. Please tell me with either DLTCEP how to find a creature and thereby his strings or (perhaps and) how to find a specific area quick

Many thanks

As Shed says, in DLTCEP, you want:
Edit -> Creature -> Load Creature
Then you can select the filename, or type the creature name and use the search button.

The search menu is for more advanced searches - so can you can find creatures who have a particular item, or spells which use a specific effect number, etc.

Okay I can find the creatures, but I don't see the strings. I can only find a string reference to the name of the creature. I miss it's entire dialogue. I can find the tab, but nothing is there. Where do I find the strings attached to the creature. If I can find those I can interject. But now I find files with the creature statistics nothing else. What am I doing wrong this time?

Search dialogue first, then search for creature containing that dialogue.
Should be simple.

I know I sound noobish at the moment. But I didn't wrote down the sentences, which they have to interject with. I only now the creatures. But it seems IE is the only lengthy possible solution to my own dumb fault

If you know the creature you can go through the dialog file quite easily. Either IE or DLTCEP will let you browse through the creature's dialog and tell you the string number.

Yep, the "index" in IE is the TLK string number.

For finding the correct area, use an area list like the one at IESDP.
