Obviously continuous spells drag down the performance of the game, but since installing BP spells such as Web, Chaos and Fire Shield have slowed down the game making it completely unplayable. The game continues to run but I have to pause the game on and off to see what's happening in combat. I tried turning of the VEF Vid cells option, which made the game run better with spells like chaos, but web and fire shield continue to drag the system down. Is there something the various mods change that make these spells require more processor attention, or is the problem with my hardware?

I'm not really sure, since your computer is plenty fast enough. If you're using 3d acceleration, try turning it off, if not try it with it on... Other than that all I can think if is if you have other programs running in the background, try turning them off. You could try updating your video card drivers, as well as sound card drivers, etc.
Maybe something went wrong with the BP installation?
Also, does the game slow down anywhere else? Or does it only slow down using these spells, and do the spells still slow down in places with no monsters?

There are very rare slowdowns in other places when there isn't anything happening, but the game will chug to a halt every time when these spells are cast. I just started a new BG2 game, and in the middle of a hallway with no enemies around I cast fire shield and the game slowed down just as much as it does with 20 goblins on the screen, and did the same thing with a web spell, having no one actually in the area of effect, and it still slowed down.

Well I reinstalled and played BG2 vanilla with no slowdown. I suppose since I worked through BGT I'll just install BP to reduce the chances of whatever messed the install up.

I've looked in the BP forums and saw another thread illustrating a similar problem to yours. Here's a link :
