I'm not sure if that is what i'm looking for. I was looking for a way to change some characteristics of my NPC's. Can you do that with Near Infinity?

Let me state it differently so that there is no confusion. If you don't have DLTCEP and NearInfinity you should not be playing mods. There will be bugs in any mod (even in an unmodded game) and you will need these programs to figure them out. NearInfinity is the easiest to use.

DLTCEP and NI are not essential for playing mods, and trying to fix a bug without sufficient knowledge of IE editing is likely to cause more trouble.

That said, I am in favour of everyone downloading DLTCEP and NI, and learning to mod :-)

I assure you that plenty of people without DLTCEP or NI have no trouble playing mods that are well-maintained. Perhaps stuff like TDD still isn't in a state to be played by people without editing knowledge-- I don't know, although I suspect that thanks to various people's work it's been substantially fixed up since the infamous early versions. However, it's definitely not the general case that all or even most mods require the user to be able to deal with bugs themselves.

I would strongly agree with Igi and Sim.

thanks for the advice, i downloaded NI but I can't seem to open anything.  I followed the tutorial on the site but I couldn't open the file.  Will it work with this mod, maybe I have the wrong version.  Is there a tutorial somewhere that I could read.  Any help would be appreciated

Thanx

What happens when you try to open a file?

NI should be able to open the game regardless of the mods on it...

Did you install Java Runtime Environment (JRE)? You'll find all requirement to run Near Inifinity on its site (including link for the JRE).
Also, after installing JRE, ensure you don't associate JAR archive with your archiver program (WinRAR, ..., if you install or configure it afterwards) otherwise Near Infinity will not run but open as an archive in your archiver program.

If you have the newest version of JRE, then you must get the beta version of NI from the same download page as you got your version of NI. I think JRE 1.5 or LESS works with the NI1.32 (this is a guess). The beta version link may be misleading, because it gives you some version like 1.28, but it is actually something close to NI1.33b18.

I downloaded the JRE and the beta version of NI. I followed the tutorial on the site the describes how to fix Carsomyr. I searched, found the item but when I press "open" or "open in a new window", nothing happens. Maybe I'm hopeless, I've used plenty of computer programs so I'm not PC illiterate but maybe I'm not cut out for this one.

Hmm... can you open any file type at all?

What version of JRE are you using?

I can't open any .itm, .gam, .cre, .are, etc...  Basically I can't open very much (except pictures)

I think I downloaded version 2.0 or something of JRE, maybe I should get an older version?

I use J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 with NearInfinity 1.33 beta 18. Can you try that? You can get it at http://java.sun.com. Of course, get the runtime version.

The program appears to be running, so it's likely not a run-time thing.

You do have nearinfinity.jar in an actual game folder? I'm unsure of how it detects the location of games these days.

Where do you get NI 1.33 'cause it's not on the site.  I downloaded the most current one and it's only 1.32

Probably so, but I have run into this problem (and fixed it) before, so this is why I'm suggesting what I suggested. From a programming perspective, the actual problem that is occurring would likely be that an aspect of the 'OPEN' function was altered/updated in some way because it was buggy/needed improvement/whatever. Not that I know any java...

This is the download page for Near Infinity. You get version 1.33 beta (rather misleading I should say) from the link that says '1.32.1 beta 24'.
