Never played IWD. I'm loving IWD2 though. TGM hit the nail on the head when he said that the rules & abilities are great in IWD2.

Indeed Rathwelin. Yet, if you want to enjoy IWD2's story 100%, you really have to play IWD before that.

What story?

Seriously, I didn't expect much story wise from IWD2. My expectation was that for story I would play a game like BGII.

I played IWD2 so that I could play an Infinity Engine game (I *like* this engine) that had something close to 3.0 rules.

Only recently have I actually started to play 3.x PnP DnD and I was curious what a CRPG experience would be like. I was not disappointed.

IWD2 actually brings out some of the weaknesses of BGII quite strongly. With apologies to Refinements, in general I like the feat system better than HLAs. The IWD2 Bard is *much* better than the BGII bard. But more than this the IWD2 fights and treasure distribution feel a lot better balanced to me. Most glaringly IWD2 really shows how ?gimped? BGII is with the excess of healing potions in the latter game.

I could go on, but for now I?m really hoping that someone picks up the Icewind Gate project and finishes converting BGII to the IWD2 engine.

hmm, maybe I should go get IWD 2 afterall. I didn't like all the 'white' feeling in IWD so I didn't buy IWD 2.

And you are not the only one. :)
Yet this is what we can get out from BG2, with the total alck of the feat system. -_-

Only liked IWD2 for the "full-HP-class-complement-after-level-10".
Didn't like the "random-dropped-treasures-despite-challenging-encounters-that-aren't-worth-a-damn"
On the plus side, because of this I did get some Strength Bracers right after the goblin attack at end of Chapter 1.
But the game just reeks sometimes. Sliding XP cap doesn't help.
Music: Not as good as BG2
Graphics: Same engine.
Atmosphere: Slightly better. Jungles of Chult(did we go there? It's been 2 years) a good addition. Insane puzzle design in pyramid. Very tough fights.

It's IWD all the way, story, music etc. etc. IWD II was nice too, because of the 3e rules, but IWD was better in other aspects.

Though I have to agree to some points I think the story of IWD2 could have been improved by giving you the option to side with the legion. IWD has a great story and I prefer the setting to BG. Yuan-Ti are my fav race.

Yep, the possibility to side with the legion would have made the game a LOT better. I just wish they had done that...

Although both games are pretty linear, i felt Icewind Dale 2 was more linear and felt more tedious, especially the early stages of the game. (too many fetch and carry quests). what made me play again and again was the character creation, not the plot or gameplay.
