it will block any spells that do damage over duration... you will take the initial damage, but the damage over x seconds is completely blocked.  it will also blunt some to most of the initial damage.

ring of telekinesis...it takes a bit of practice, but you can pick locks many yards away from your target, completely out of sight of any guards.

This one is handy, especially when combined with an item with 100 open lock on touch. Telekinesis is one of the best spells in the game - especially if used with some form of invisibility item. Just head down to the various house vaults in Vivec and steal all the items through the bars of the door (cast telekinesis, cast invisibility or use an enchanted item with invisibility , make sure youre in sneak mode and you can get away with it even if your sneak skill is.) This saves you unlocking it and bashing all the guards to death.
