That being said, my first hope is that while engaged in the creation of such "rainbow" material that those so engaged will be able to manage the fervor of their proselytizing and their supercilious intolerance for others beliefs and traditions. Not to be patronizing but being respectful and tolerant of others beliefs apply not only to those who don't approve of homosexuality but also to those who do approve/endorse it.
My second hope is similar to the first in that instead of going on a crusade to "overthrow game conservatism" that modders just continue to create fun mods that, to echo Simding0's point, are free from tacky selling points in an attempt at being unique.

Well, you convinced me to change the initial post to focus more on the essentials and less on the politics.

But there have been repeated demands upon Bioware/Obsidian to implement this choice, and they have officially said "no". They HAVE listened to people who want to be evil, implementing everything from racism/rape/baby sacrifice/devil worship in the games, something which takes far more work than simply *not* adding the CHECK_GENDER tag to dialogue. I cannot see why they are so against meeting the other kind of demands when they make so much effort to support people who dream about being a menace to society in every single dialogue plus different endings.

I can honestly say I was looking for a more technical discussion about dissecting in-game resources to change game mechanics, although I was guessing some kind of discussion about the theme was inevitable.

One bonus, for thoose who are interested, is ofcourse to learn how Bioware/Obsidian constructed their romance mechanics.

The ins and outs of BioWare romance coding, for BG2 at least, have been pretty thoroughly dissected already. :) I'm not sure about the other games.

I never met a psychologist when I was playing BG, and I never heard about psychologists being present in Realms.

Create a "Dr. Phil" mod, as a Show or as a joinable NPC...

Yet again, I am now talking about HotU, NWN2 and KOTORIII. :)
For BG2, it's been done. :)

(I hope I posted in the right part of the forum... this part isnt BG2 or infinity specific is it?)

I think the closest you can come is playing Cleric in BG2 :D
I actually did some NPC counceling there.

This makes a lot of sense, but it's worth pointing out that timidity isn't the only reason people choose not to include same-sex romances in mods or games. I considered a female romance path for Arkalian, but at present time I've decided against it; I might add it in an update at some point if there's a significant expressed community interest. The reasons I decided against it, aside from the time and mental resources involved, mainly have to do with her background. Beyond that, it doesn't fit her character at an intuitive level, and, admittedly, same sex relationships aren't all that interesting to me personally. The issue, though, isn't that I'm afraid of offending people or mindlessly adhering to societal norms.

It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

PS:

Shouldn't it be "conservativism?" ^.^

<sarcasm>Yeah, but that's just cartoon violence and games and yadda yadda, whereas portraying homosexuality to children (because, as we all know, only kids play video games) will make them think it's okay to be gay and then they all turn gay and we will all go to hell!!!!!1one</sarcasm>

Given the (fairly low) percentage of homosexuals or bisexual individuals in the real world as compared to the general population, the actual likelihood of one of the original bioware NPC's suitable for romancing (ie not married, in love with someone else, your sister/brother) being gay or bisexual is pretty low. At best, one out of the whole bunch would be gay or bisexual......and that doesn't mean that the NPC in question would be romantically interested in the PC. If every NPC you were to run into were bisexual and interested in the PC, that would be more than a little unrealistic (not to mention completely out of character for several NPC's). I'm all for gay/bisexual romance mods that add new NPC's and would play one if its quality were on par with Kelsey and Keto. I am more than a little ambivalent, however, about making Jaheira or Anomen bi-sexual, for example.
