So, yeahhh. I never used Antialiasing before, and so I turned it on, but it crashed my game a bit then it crashed my comp, so now I can't get on cuz I dont know the password... (It's my brother's shit pc) So what does Antialiasing do exactly?

EDIT: Oh sorry, this is in the wrong section...

Reduces or eliminates the "jagged" effect you see along the edges of straight lines, especially straight lines that are viewed at an angle to you.

Here's a good explanation with pictures:

This is the right section.:)

AA (anita-Aliasing) removes the jaggies you see. It smooths everything with a small hit to FPS.

Generally speaking, antialiasing means that, if you draw a non-vertical, non horizontal line, it'll try to blend the colors to achieve a smoother-looking image, rather than a pixelated one (http://en.wikipedia....ki/Antialiasing).
As an example, Analog Clock from KDE without antialiasing:
no_antialiasing.png
and with antialiasing:

Since it's only a graphical effect, you can safely play without it and ignore the problem.

Well the "small" part depends on your video card. Older cards can struggle severely with even 2xAA. The newest beasts, like the 8800 series, can happily do insane levels of AA.

Well, Luchaire, not all of us can afford those monsters *Cough*You, Floyd, Sev and others*Cough* and I have a 7600, and it can run default 4xAA just fine!

Concealing a sentence in a cough doesn't work well....

I have a 7800GS, Hector, not one of the "monsters". I run 4xAA, too. :P (luckily, that's enough for the resolutions I play at, but if I were forced to run at 1024x768 or less, I'd want at least 6xAA)

EDIT: If I'm playing with SM2.0 HDR in Oblivion, though, I have to drop to 2xAA or my framerate falls through the floor. :(

The light reflecting of the surfaces blinds me!

Is that what causes the extreme reflectiveness?
Cool, now I know.
And knowing is half the battle.

I have a 7800GT card myself, AA on only 2x, but if I turn off HDR, can I turn up the AA?

Yes, depending on the resolution you play at (at over 1280x960, I'd expect a 7800GT to choke on 4xAA). But unless you're running SM2.0 "Fake" HDR (Timeslip's mod) you're not using HDR and AA at the same time anyway. :P

I have my game resolution set at 1024x768, but it's at 1280x1024 when not in-game on a 19" CRT monitor (dam thing takes up so much room on my desk).
