It looks great, and well crafted, but costs $35 after the evaluation period. It would definitely be worth having an automatic combat scripter that tracks all the wild variables, feats, cover, etc - heck, it even tracks XP, encounter balance, etc. Just the ticket for an idiot like me who needs to track combat with bad guys for 8 to 10 PCs of greater than 6th level, complete with prestige classes. Input your characters, tos on the monsters etc. all distributed as standard 3.5E materials (contains MMI, II, PG3.5, DMG3.5, and at least one other source already). The darned thing even generates apropriate weather patterns, potential random encounters; heck, this is what I would have done for PnP games if I were a REAL programmer.

Unfortunately, a bunch of the FR materials do not match standard 3.5E, and so far not much has popped up in an internet search. Is anyone using this, and do they have info on where I can get good FR materials for it?

I tried it out for a PnP game and it has some excellent features. It was especially good for keeping track of variables, what bonuses people had from spells and other effects, and spell durations. I'm not certain it made combat quicker for my group - we moved over to 3rd edition soon after it came out and have lots of experience with the rules - but I'm quite certain that it prevented people 'forgetting' when spells wore off and which modifiers would penalise them in various situations . In the end I didn't purchase it, as it didn't run reliably on my very old laptop and no-one really liked playing with a desktop taking up one end of the table. What I tried of the data entry was quite easy, but I didn't go very far with it. There are people doing work with the data, there's a Yahoo group called genieslamp that does it. If it's like other yahoo groups then the file section probably includes work people have done on various books, and I'd expect FR material to be included. Since I'm not a member of the group I can't tell you more than that.

One program which does similar things and is entirely free is PCGen. It doesn't have quite the same range of features when it comes to creating encounters, but it has GM features and can calculate experience points, encounter difficulties, and similar things. I've used that a bit for character generation, and have some custom FR files of my own though they aren't comprehensive. The main difficulty I have with it is that it's java based, and runs slowly on my desktop PC.

I actually find excel one of the most valuable tools for keeping track of things. There's a very good PC generator program called Heroforge which works with Excel 2000 and later. It includes most published material, though not everything for FR, and it isn't too hard to add more yourself. However, there's only the most basic information included since they work on the assumption you have the material yourself - it's not that helpful if you don't. I usually find I can keep track of spell durations and bonuses in a spreadsheet too.

Back from the brink.

Like RPGs? Like Star Wars? Think combining the two would be fun? Read Darths and Droids, and discover the line "Jar Jar, you're a genius".

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

Thanks for the info! I have gotten it to work, and gotten onto one of the two Yahoo groups; unfortunately, the author is doing both PhD work and getting married so development has ground to a halt. It now supports 3.5E, but there are some difficulties - notably, like many modders, they have run into WoC problems. FR campaign stuff is slim to none, and there seem to be some difficulties getting new FR feats and prestige classes. Most of all, unlike our IE community, the main Yahoo development group is entirely inactive, and since no one can get authorized they can't move the files to the "new" group, so the tutorials for creating your own scripts (needed to make many things happen) are unavailable.

I did manage to take it for a test combat run, which is my personal scare.

I built the challenge according to the program's internal check to be "Challenging"; if he had survied the encounter, it would have been 2800xp.

There were some notable bugs. Without automated targeting, the combat counter rolled against the PC biut did not apply the damage. It recognized Riysler's "Cleave" and allowed him a second attack when the Priest went down, but a number of times DMing had to take a "modification" of the combat log (9 figures can't successfully engage 1 without specuial ruling).

All in all, for basic setup, this tool could seriously speed up combat calculations for larger parties, but at a cost. Many FR feats are unaccounted for. Even Riysler, who was a straight humaln Cleric, had troubles - although less than I did, being a 2E DM and still new to 3.5E rules.

My jury is still out. I was able to get a reasonable combat going with 2 hours of research and an hour of messing about. In a "loose" campaign, where players are ok with their characters having substitute feats for certain combats, I think this might work.

The quick DM reinterpretation:

"Riysler flings himself on the suprised group of archers, furious at their acts of desecration of the undead. As his sream of outrage beats about their ears, the archers stare in astonishment at the recklessly charging Cleric of Kelemvor. Several recover quickly, and a volley of arrows flights towards Riysler, several striking their mark but none slowing his charge. With a swift overhand stroke, Riysler crashes into their midst, magical scythe swinging in retribution."

"The evil priest gasps as a scythe strike tears into him, but the archers react quickly. Their leader drops his bow and wades into the fray, acalling out to one obviously shaken archer on the fringes "Have at 'em!". Short swords stab and thrust as the eight seek to overwhelm the one."

"The evil cleric is the first to fall, his blood reconsecrating the hallowed ground. Riysler's scythe hums as it passes through the evil cleric, lodging in the archer lieutenant. The cost is great; sword strike after sword strike puch through Riysler's chainmail, and soon both the lieutenant and Riysler find themselves locked face to face."

"The lieutenant falls first, but the crowding archers repay the slaying of their two leaders with fury. Riysler falls to his knees, to his face... and into the strong harsh arms of his God."

Erm... Riysler isn't stupid enough to charge headlong into a group of archers like that, mind you. He may not fear, and indeed welcome, death, but he won't throw his life of sorts away so readily. :)

That said, the program looks interesting. I'll have to give it a try myself.

Well, perhaps with a group of us playing with it (especially if someone knows Visual Basic, as that appears to be what the scripting would be, it might be worth it. I don't want to detract from my own modding time, but I need to do something with mass combat that means a few less minutes of time.

@Tempest - yup -sorry - you got voted guinea pig by virtue of having both the most straightforward PC for creation, and the interesting addition of a custom weapon. The good news is that you can create weapons, etc., within the program, too. The learning curve is a little daunting, though.
