It seems to me that almost every major NPC either has a romance going (Bioware) or has one modded or in the works through modding.

Except one! And I think it might be time to address this oversite; So here is an idea:

One evening in the docks area, as <CHARNAME> and co. are on the quest to help the neighborhood shadowmaster with some packages (you know the quest) the party encounters a woman named Mitzuhaira, a traveller from far away - (Well, not THAT far, Yoshimo, if in party knows her - though he is perplexed to see her as he seriously believed her to be dead.) - who is disembarking a ship that recently pulled into the dock.

They assist Mitzuhaira, who had the bad luck to be the intended victim in a random mugging, and find that she, like Minsc, has a ...companion...on her own, Calm, a Guinea Pig. Like Minsc and Boo, Mitzuhaira and Calm are pretty much inseperable - Unlike Minsc and Boo, Calm seems to be the voice of reason (Literally, for She has the fundamentals of speach thanks to a charm) of the pair - Though unfortunately Calm has some serious memory issues and can't remember much in the way of how she came to be with Mitzuhaira. (Quest!)

Mitzuhaira herself, whilst reasonably friendly, is sort of a personality zero - she doesn't stand out or endear herself to anyone really, though she doesn't generate Dislike either - Except in Yoshimo, who feels something odd about her and doesn't care to have her around.

If Mitzuhaira is a cypher-type, Calm is anything but - Quickly gaining the party's friendship, trust and respect - and invoking deep (Previously unknown) romantic feelings in one of them - Boo. Boo it seems is smitten, and not only engages in frequent conversations with Calm (Those of you against simple interRacial dating might as well quit now...) but actually sneaks away during rest breaks to be with his (hopefully) beloved.

As the relstionship deepens betwen the two, dark secrets are brought to light about the companionship between Calm and Mitzuhaira, as well as jealously and conflicts between Boo and Minsc (Who is COMPLETELY perplexed by the sudden change in behavior from his longtime friend.)

This mod would explore friendship and intimacy issues across the board.

Stats:

NPC: Calm (and Mitzuhaira)
Banters - Yes (Calm, extensively, at least two with each NPC and <CHARNAME>) Mitzuhaira, not so many and frequently one word answers (At least until after Spellhold) EXCEPT with Yoshimo who she speaks with at length and mostly in an advisarial way...
Romanceable - Yes (Calm, romanceable ONLY by Boo), Mitzuhaira - No, sorry.
Love Talks - Yes, Boo and Calm (with a conflict between Minsc and Boo - though the Romance part of that remains to be seen, mercifully)
Quests - Yes, one small one that takes awhile - figure out the secret of Mitzuhaira's past.
ToB - Anything is possible
Voicing - Sort of: >SQUEAK< (And subtitles) Minor human voicing maybe.

Aside from a tiny problem Bigg pointed out (poor Boo would be crushed!!!!), I have only one thing to say:

NB: the following bit might offend the sensibility of a 5 years old... so read only if you're sure that you won't be offended.

Besides, given the usual position in which animals tend to have sex (woman under, man from behind) he shouldn't be crushed. At worst, he'll have an extremely hard time getting into position and staying there.

Not unless I can figure out SConrad's tutorial on "Making your own BGII Movies" AND I can figure out how old Boo is. (Florida laws are stiff and I don't want to get involved in Hampster-porn...

If you wanted to go with a different species, you could go with a gerbil. They're more or less the same size as hamsters. Or you could just go with another hamster.

Sorry, MiM, I didn't realize you were completely serious about this. The big problem I foresee is that Boo only talks to Minsc. Unless you wanted to go with a whole lot of Minsc quoting Boo, you're going to have to give the PC the ability to understand Boo, and that kind of spoils the relationship between Minsc and Boo. The gag works because you never really know what Boo is saying, or if it's all just Minsc, and he's projecting it onto Boo.

What's the problem with same-species romances? I'm sure there'd be a huge outcry if ggiB released a man/chimp romance.

I spent some time reading up the Rodent taxonomy in Wikipedia, and decided that it would be redundant to say that Voles, Lemmings, New World Rats and Muskrats are the closest possible to Hamsters... and they're still as different as Humans and Orangutangs (same Family, different SubFamily).

Not unless <...> I can figure out how old Boo is. (Florida laws are stiff and I don't want to get involved in Hampster-porn...

He is most surely of age (he is at least one year old given the bg1/bg2 gap, and most hampster live two years).

I thought of that, but the idea of TWO adventurers having hampster companions... Though in Calm's case it remains to be seen WHO is the Dominant one.

As far as Boo only speaking to Minsc - Who Says? Minsc? And anyway, love does strange things. Who knows what Boo might do if he falls in love...which might bring about some jealousy in Minsc

What's REALLY sad is that I have the same basic relationship with a modder I greatly respect as Harry did with Mel Torme' on the old "Night Court" TV show...

I am learning how to mod, finally. And when I start to get it right.............

Well, since Boo is a miniature giant space hamster, he could fall for someone's miniature Capybara.

Here's an idea to explain his speaking the common tongue: When the Sahuagin (sp?) cast the "understand speech spell", Boo could be affected, too.

As I said - Calm can speak common due to a charm, Boo is fluent in hampster, obviously, so who knows. It could work out fine.
