Info: Nightmares are proud equine creatures with hearts as black and evil as the dark abysses from which they come. They dwell on the plane of Hades. A nightmare is a wild and restless creature. I always wanted to draw a Nightmare so i finaly made it! Maybe I should add more lightening but anyway, i like it! biggrin.gif

Just the hind legs should probably thin down more. But otherwise It seems all ok to me! ^^

Thanks! I think you're right about the legs, i should be more careful next time!
I'm happy with it because it wasn't an easy pose (at least for my level) and i was afraid i wouldn't make it but all gone well!

Thanks Aliya! Well, now that i think of it, it would be cool indeed, but i used as reference the original D&D Nightmare so i used smaller flames Don't worry, along with tattoo, i love flames (mostly ethereal but also normal ones) so you will see more flames soon! haha

The Nightmare looks good ;-) I'd suggest you to make the flames a bit brighter, you could create a new layer, set it to 'screen' and paint over the flames with a bright orange. The name 'screen' could be different in the program you're using, just try changing the layer 'merging' properities until you see something you like.

if you want, you could keep on doing experiments with the flames. From what I can see, it seems that after creating the new layer and setting it on 'screen', you painted on the *whole* flame: try to paint only on the the part nearer to the nightmare's body. Flames are brighter near their own origin and get darker as they rise up in the sky, painting in 'screen' mode basically make things brighter. Sometimes I use this technique to add "glow" where things are under a strong source of light: for exammple, in the picture of Charname and Rizdaer's wedding I added the glow on their skin. This effect is like the "bloom" effect you see in 3D videogames.

Since I'm not very good at explaining, I'm attaching some examples

HOW DO THE 'SCREEN' LAYER LOOK LIKE (THE WHITE AND THE YELLOW) IF SET TO 'NORMAL'





I hope you won't mind, I did some experimentation with your picture: I increased contrast and added some 'glow' on a layer set to 'screen'. I found useful to paint some white areas as well. The orange color overlaps with the nightmare's body in some parts, it gives an orange color to light reflections.

Thanks Epantiras! That's a cool effect! I'd call it extra shiny hilight! I'll also use it in my next creature i'm currently working on!
As about the flames, I'll try your guidance and i hope i'll soon release a new version. Thank u so much for your help!

Edit: After some experiments i decided to let the flames as they are. Orange glow is better around the flames but it's no so good as a body reflaction IMO. I mean that in the picture as a whole, the current tone creates a nice blending. So i'll keep it as it is for now. I'll sure try to make use of it on future flames though! In fact, not only in flames but on many shiny thingys!

Thanks Aliya! The slight darkened part is intended in order to create an effect that "it comes out from the darkness". I'm glad that you find it nice, and creepy is a compliment for a beholder, isn't it?
