Well, I'm not sure of what should happen here : after coming back from the Haunted Mansion, you've the dialog with the Mayor who says "take the key to the basement", and I did have the game msg "party gained an item". But I don't have any new key anywhere in inventory, and can't access past the secret passage in the basement ... Is this key "the key" of this problem or is there stg else to do ? (I disarmed the 2 traps I found in the basement also).

You fount the first trap, which indicates that you got the key... you have to find one more trap to...
PS, you don't have to find anything, as the story will continue without anything from the basement.

In case the BG2 game crashes post the content of your baldur.err file. To get it to record stuff, open up the 'baldur.ini' in your game folder with Notepad, and under the [Program Options] section in the file, make a new line and type in 'Logging On=1' (without the '' quotes, unless the line is already there)... Save the file and exit. Now go back into the game and try to reproduce the crash. Then look in your game folder again for the Baldur.err file and open it with the Notepad to analyze its contents, or let us do it.

I disarmed *2* traps - one at the entrance and one near the door... Maybe the key disappeared after disarming one, I looked only after when I still couldn't enter. I Shadowkeepered the key in my inventory again, to no avail... I've looked at everything, and didn't find any clue.
Ok I can continue, but how in hell can this door be opened, I can't succeed even by cheating !!

Edit : OOOH you're really clever !! Found it, spent one FT for it !

In case there's still misunderstanding on this, the 'traps'/switches can only be found and disarmed/removed in the sequence, so find one trap, disarm it, find other trap somewhere near, disarm it, and then find the next and after that's removed, the door should open. As the second trap won't show up until the first is removed.

When I created this, I really didn't expect it to be difficult. Afterall, the traps are in the same spot and work the same way as this room in ToB.

I'm sort of late to this party, but:

(...) As the second trap won't show up until the first is removed.

Actually it happened to me that the traps showed up (and were disarmed) in the wrong order. After this, there is no way to open the door.

There's three  traps... did you find and disarm all of them ? There's no wrong order ... just one order, which is the reason for the confusion probably as the closes to the door is not the last but indeed the first. And the next is the second closes and then the last is further away from the door actually.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

This must be the reason why I didn't manage to replicate that particular event. Must have been someother reason the secret door were unlockable (either this or my memory plays games with me). Well, thank you for your answer.
