Candle for a Mage quest

I just did the above quest and if I tell him about the guy in his house I get the promised reward (part dropped on the ground) but the candle doesn't get removed. If I don't tell him about the guy I get 800 exp instead of the reward and the candle is taken. It looks like this quest is partially bugged.

The candle not being taken appears to be a bug. I could add a fix for that in my fixpack. Speaking of NTotSC, I have no idea whether the different rewards were intended, or were not. There are many oddities in NT, and some appear absolutely intentional; don't you think this quest itself is a bit strange? I could check an older version of NT, but I don't think anything will come out, it has probably always been the same.
