Hi All:

I have a mega mod game made with BWS.  I am certain these bugs have nothing to do with BWS.

1)  This is a game crash.  This happens in Trade Way North.  At the south center, near a clump of trees which are west of center, you find a random group of monsters.  If you attack with your entire group, part on the west of center and part on the right of center, the game crashes.  If you attack with only the lead character, there is no crash.  If you move your entire group west of center than attack, there is no crash.  A minor inconvenience.

2)  Game crash similar to #1.  In Fire Leaf Forest, north on the east side is a river.  You can find a random group of monsters north of the river.  Attack with part of your group north of the river and part of your group south of the river and the game crashes.  A minor inconvenience.

3)  My favorite spell to kill groups of normal hobgoblins is Cloudkill.  Previously, when it was a grayish cloud, it slightly slowed the game.  Now it is a greenish cloud and the game slows in a major way.  My guess it it takes about three minutes for the green cloud to dissipate.  These are real minutes not game minutes.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Tom

Hi All:

One more minor bug.  Yalto (Priest in the Temple District, Secret of Bone Hill) responses are messed up.  After a few comments all you get is "NO VALID REPLIES OR LINKS".  At the bottom of the screen, there is a box with "WELCOME BACK (PLAYER'S NAME), HOW HAVE YOUR IN".

Hi All:

First my system:

Operating System:     Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
Computer:                 Apple Inc. iMac14,2 1.0 (using Boot Camp for Windows 7)
Processor:                 3.40 gigahertz Intel Core i5-4670 (4 core)
Hard Drive:                1025.00 GB Usable 903.18 GB Free Space
RAM:                         16 GB

Here is what I did:

Yesterday, with the game and all other programs off, I used Microsoft Disk Cleanup to get rid of all unnecessary files (Microsoft's claim) and followed that with Smart Defrag 4 to defrag all files.  Smart Defrag 4 was also used after installing the game and prior to beginning the game.  I find the game fragments many files.

Here is my problem. Prior to the last hard disk cleanup, I had placed many markers on the local maps in the game.  After the hard disk cleanup, all my markers are gone and I can no longer place markers on the local maps.

Has this happen to anyone else?  If did, could you find a way to restore adding makers to local maps?  Or seeing that there may be a major flaw, do you recommend starting a new game?

Thanks for any help and/or suggestions,

Tom

Here is my problem. Prior to the last hard disk cleanup, I had placed many markers on the local maps in the game.

Heh, well the local map markers are saved locally in the map files, in the save files. Aka, if you start a new game, none of that exist, there's a few mods that add map markers. Dialogs, and other in game events will add them too, occasionally.

Smart Defrag 4... Windows has it's own defrag tool in %windir%\system32\dfrgui.exe ... that being the quick icon path. Anyways, defragging can't have anything to do with the above, and also the game itself won't frag your files, but installing mods if you have deleted files will cause file fragmentation because the deleted space is refilled and thus the new files sometimes occupy the deleted spaces.

Which is why one could argue that you should defrag the files after your Megamod install, ones, or thousand depending on the defrag software and so forth, but doing so between installs or short playing sessions in the game is nonsense for the relative performance of the game. Today, I had 14% fragmentation rate in a 350+GB hard drive(which is not an SSD by the by), it had been half a year from last defrag, no issues showed up in any game I have.

Now, adding player created map markers should be easy, just open the (mini)map, right click the area map screen and it will give you the marker menu to put the marker to the clicked spot. The difference in the normal BG2 games is that the custom ones have one color, while the quest etc other added usually use very different colors. In EE games, you can set the custom color from 8 options yourself.

OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

Hi The Imp:

"Now, adding the map markers should be easy, just open the (mini)map, right click the map screen and it will give you the marker menu."

That is how I always do it.  That does not work this time.

I stopped at the mall and went to the Microsoft store.  I have been having troubles with Microsoft frequently popping up an ad to download Windows 10.  I do not know if that was the problem, but I got rid of that.  You will see it in C:\Windows\System32\GWX.  I got rid of it by removing the update KB3035583.  This affects computers with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.  Maybe this was the problem.

Did you try to push the upper-left button above the map ?
I know... well... how to say that... it's stupid... but... I just want to be sure that you know this button :)

Hi Fouinto:

Yes, I tried everything.  The other thing I noticed is tht the map seems to be a bit darker.  Perhaps that is just my imagination, but it just looks that way to me.

Where do you intent to set the markets, you do know that you can't set them into the dark/unexplored zones ?

Hi The Imp:

I have been using map markers for over 6 years now without a problem.  The areas are fully explored.  I set the markers and they were OK for over 5 days (real time).  During that time I went through that area over a dozen times and the markers were there.  I closed the game for the night.  Cleaned up the garbage files and defraged the hard drive.  The next day, I went to continue playing the game.  But now, all the markers are gone from all the maps and I cannot add any markers to any map.  Yes the areas seem to be a little darker, but that may be my imagination.

I am trying to figure if this is only on my computer.  I would like to know if this ever happened to anyone else.

This thread might help:  http://www.shsforums...mation-problem/

First, check if you have 3D Acceleration enabled in your Baldur.ini (or use the configuration program).

I see in your WeiDU.log that you installed 1pp's Softer Spell Effects component (#114).  You can run WeiDU --change-log on SPHORPUF.bam (the Cloudkill animation file) to see if any mods other than 1pp tweaked the animation.  You can also go into the 1pp\backup\114 folder and copy the SPHORPUF.bam from there into your override folder to revert to the version before 1pp modified it, to see if it is still slow.

Hi agb1 and others:

I gave up on the game (but I still have the files so I can continue it) and started a new game.  Using about the same mods.  If the problems persist in the new game, I will check into the causes.

The trouble is I am really a player not a mod writer.  So I have not looked into the tools to investigate what they do and how they work.  I will start that now, but I suspect it take me some time.  Is there a "DUMMIES" book for writing mods?

Thanks for all the help.  At least I can use BWS to make a mega mod game.

Here is an explanation (and script) by The Imp for how to get the change-log information I suggested:

Spoiler

With a mega-mod game, it's almost inevitable that you will find some problems, especially when you consider that many of the mods are still under development so two different installations might not be exactly the same even with the same mod selection if one of the mods was updated meanwhile.  The best we can do is take it one issue at a time and work together to fix the problems we find.

What I'm trying to do with BWS lately is collect and document the community's experiences and discoveries in the tool (with updated mod descriptions and warnings and a clear definition of 'Expert' status) so that we can avoid stumbling into the same problems that others have already found.
