The description of channel magic says : "In addition all spells directed at the caster will be absorbed (up to 8th level) and this allows previously cast spells to be recalled."

Imagine this as an alternate Spell Trap: it absorbs x level of spells, and at the same time it helps to recall the exact x level of spells to the caster's memory. If the sorcerer is targeted by a 1st level Magic Missile, he will only be able to recall 1 level of lost spells. If he absorbs a 6th level Disintegrate spell, he will be able to recall 6 level of spells (for example a 6th level spell, or 3 2nd level spells).
