Guys, Elminster is a human but he was born around 300 DR. So, when the events of BG occur, he has more than 1000 years. In fact, how long this guy lives ? Maybe Mystra gave him a life more longer than the one of a normal human ?

Well he is a son of a goddess; maybe he has a life span of a Middle Earth's elf or something like that.

Thus it was that Rincewind, hurrying through the crowded, flare-lit evening bazaars of Morpork with the Luggage trundling behind him, jostled a tall dark figure, turned to deliver a few suitable curses, and beheld Death.
It had to be Death. No-one else went around with empty eye sockets and, of course, the scythe over one shoulder was another clue.

Liches don`t necessarily equal with crazy people. Minds of liches, unlike minds of vampires, withstand time without problems. Vampires often have their psychologies deteriorated over time, liches remain sane if they were sane in their previous lives. They remain motivated with their own goals for centuries and millennia, thus being able to start researching things which are far beyond any mortal`s comprehension.

Thanks, but it`s mostly off-topic. :D

I think only someone who had read the Elminster novels can answer the initial question.

Although the lich has no interest in good or evil as we understand it, the creature will do whatever it must to further its own causes. Since it feels that the living are of little importance, the lich is often viewed as evil by those who encounter it. In rare cases, liches of a most unusual nature can be found which are of any alignment.
The lich can exist for centuries without change.

There are good-aligned liches throughout the Realms, indeed.

Whats wrong with it?

True. The easiest examples are the Arch-Liches, who tend to be good or neutral. Or another example could be the Lich that guards the Nether Scroll in the lower tombs.

But Elminster is not a Lich, nor has he any connection to undeath.

Is Elmister Mystra's son? I don't think so, someone correct me if i'm wrong. I thought he was just a farmer before he became Mystra's chosen. Blackstaff isn't a god's son as well and he's Mystra's chosen too. Only the seven sisters are Mystra's daughter, well in an indirect way.

Elminster can time-travel, part of his Chosen ability. That would be probably why he's over 1000 years old and as a Chosen, his normal lifespan has been magically enhanced. Ok, that's as far as I know. I haven't read the entire Elminster saga yet. :P

well, they go to the Halls of Mandos after death, so forever is a better answer, I think.
