The henchmen I liked most were :

Daelan Red Tiger (serious, but good)

Deekin ("I'm gonna sing the Doom song now!")

Linu( I love her,she's so cute and clumsy!)

Dorna(my partner in crimes)

Valen(excellent warrior,badass and gentleman.)

Nathyrra(very interesting character)

 

NPCs: Aaring Gend (At first he didn't liked him that much, but I changed my mind with time.<3)

Drogan, and Harpers in general.

Mephistopheles (One of the best villain ever *_*)

In my opinion it's important that the character is well fit in the Forgotten Realms.
Then,I'd rather have a who may kick ass, have some good interaction with the PC and the rest of the group.
Romance is good, but it may be just optional.
