Need help with changing and saving CRE values with NI

26 January 2006 - 06:54 AM

I'm attempting to change the Current and Max HPs of a character in an old save file from BG1 for use in a new BG2 game as stated in this post: http://www.shsforums...showtopic=18920
I am using Near Infinity and though I can locate the proper file and attributes and change those attributes(I think), when I try to re-open the file to make sure that I have indeed made the change, I get an error that says, " Error reading BALDUR.GAM   null"
What am I doing wrong?

1) When I open the file from the tree on the left, I hve two tabs: view and edit. Under the view tab I am presented with three sections on the right: variables, player characters and non-player characters with a view/edit button beneath each. The edit tab presents me with a list of attributes and values. I choose "edit".
2)I scroll down and highlight party member 0 and hit the view/edit button at the bottom of the page.
3)I have view(with which I can see all sorts of player info) and edit tags.
4)I choose the edit tag and scroll down to CRE, highlight it and hit the view/edit button at the bottom of the window.
5)I then have view and edit tags. I choose edit, find the two entries I want to change, click on each, and change the value.

The only time I am presented with an opportunity to save is back at step "1". I have tried closing all the windows that opened in steps 2-5 and then hit the "save" button as well as hitting the "save" button before  closing the windows; nothing prevents the above mentioned error and I can't re-access the BALDUR.GAM file.
Again, what am I doing wrong?

Need help with NI

23 January 2006 - 10:41 PM

First, so you will know what my goal is, I'll quote an exchange I had with Sir BillyBob:

Hey,

I just started a new BG2 game last night. I decided to use an old character from BG1: A fighter that would be good to dual over to mage later on. Anyway, I imported him over from a BG1 final save and the hit points don't seem to add up right. If I remember correctly, back when I was running him in BG1, I always made sure that he got max HP when he leveled-up. Between that and his high constitution, he should have almost 40 more HPs than he's now showing. He has a monster constitution (gotta love those BG1 books), but it seems like he only received +1 HP per level and not +5. I'd like to correct that. Can you advise me?

You can use ShadowKeeper though I never recommend the product, it doesn't always work when mods are included in your game. Near Infinity (NI) is the best product for this. Just edit the CHR file before importing him into your game or edit the GAM file of a saved game. Edit the HP and max HP of the person. Otherwise, the difference will be assumed damage to the character. If both match, the game thinks he is healthy. Don't forget to save your work before you close out NI. Start a new game, import the character and see if the fix works.

I've downloaded the NearInfinity.jar but I can't figure out how to run NI. I extracted, but I couldn't find an executable file (just some folders and about a hundred *.class files) Odd thing about those *.class files; they all want to overwrite themselves with 0kb versions of themselves when I extract.

Thank you,

The completely inexperienced Vladimir

NEJ question- Imoen as "continuous" character

23 January 2006 - 07:52 PM

Since the NEJ mod is associated with The Big Picture as an optional install, I thought that it would be OK to post this question here. If I'm wrong, I'll be glad to find a NEJ forum.
Anyway, I quote from a readme for NEJ:

"Additionally, she will become a "continious" character. When the party returns to Amn and Imoen is taken to spellhold, all the XP and changes made to the character will transfer over to the same character  you pick up at Spellhold."

What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that Imoen will "keep pace" XP-wise while she is in Spellhold and when I recover her, she will be roughly equivalent in level as my main character? A couple of years ago, I remember being dissapointed that she was so far below my party in levels when we freed her.

But how do I start the game? A year and a half ago, when I had SoS and just a few other mods, I used the SoS icon that was installed on my desktop. Now, I have a SoS and a TDD icon. Do I use either one of those, or something else?

G3Tweaks spell progression tables

21 January 2006 - 04:30 PM

Seanas has recommended that I add the G3Tweakpack to my Mod install list http://www.shsforums...showtopic=18816 (scroll down for my revised list)and I do plan to use several of the components. I do have a question, however, about two components.

P&P Spell Progression Tables
This component will change the spell progression tables to match 2e AD&D. Mages, clerics, and bards will receive more spells at higher levels, and bards will be able to progress to using level 7 spells. If installed with the Druids Use Cleric Level and Spell Progression, druids will use the P&P cleric spell progression table.

Druids Use Cleric Level and Spell Progression
A strict druid hierarchy governs P&P rules for druids; this doesn't translate well into BG2. This component will simply let druids follow the same level and spell progression tables as clerics.

You see, the Big Picture installation that I'm following will allow progression to level 50. Do these two components also extend to level 50? If not, I'm afraid that they might end up essentially putting a "cap" on spell progression at some lower level. Perhaps I'm being too cautious but I really want to avoid any problems.

And if they won't cause any problems, what do people think about those two tweaks; are they worthwhile?
