What's people's feels about mages in IWD?

The rarity and eclectic availability of spells, at least early game, in comparison to BG seems to hinder mages to some extent. 

That said, web and fireball is an amazing combination, especially in the large group encounters. 

Thoughts?

One of my favourite things about IWD is the ability to construct your whole party the way you want it without missing out on NPC quests and banters etc and how this allows for idiosyncratic tactics and potentially silly character concepts that can work within a specific party.
