Oh my, almost half a year has passed already. I'm sure the author has their reasons, but it's always sad to see a project become inactive for a while. Alas, that's how life works at times. However!--As long as it's not officially cancelled, I have hope.

Frankly, I had considered this abandoned, to the extent that I've had a few computer meltdowns and I didn't consider Darian's files something important worth backing up regularly. I learned a lot about writing with Darian, but... the tedium of coding, and the flirting, in-depth romance, in-depth personal talks with him killed me. I'm also not a person with a long attention span in general - I got bogged down enough in the details and nuts and bolts that my muse left.

K'aeloree reports that he may have Darian's old alpha on his old computer, and he's talked me into at least giving it another look-over, and that he may be willing to do the nuts and bolts of coding. He actually asked my permission to finish the mod on his own, but... Darian was my first major writing project. Perhaps the time has come to revisit this, and truth be told, a lot of the writing was pretty much finished.

I say this: I make absolutely no promises. If - if - things work out with K'aeloree, I'm afraid I very probably won't include some of the promised features. My imagination does tend to ever outstrip my grasp.

Please do not get your hopes up. This project is in a coma and on life support, but K'aeloree has come along with an experimental treatment that may or may not do anything.

Well, for what it's worth...

I have been in further contact with K'aeloree, and he's promised to handle the modding and coding if I do the writing. More than that, the bulk of Darian's SoA stuff is in fact done. I will be working with K'aeloree to do the interjections over the next several days, which should be the last big component.

That said, Darian's non-romantic friendship has been scrapped. I don't think it suits him to develop a close friendship with Charname. He's just not that sociable a person.


Do not thank me for this. Thank K'aeloree for abruptly asking me about dusting off a project I'd all but forgotten about. He will be the one taking charge of the project - I'm just the writer now.

No. At least, not in the foreseeable future. K'aeloree wants to polish what is in the mod at present and finish it fairly quickly. There will be some player-initiated dialog, but he'll otherwise not have much to say to Charname. Even later, I don't see him ever having a proper friendship arc. Generally, he talks when he's concerned about something or wants to know something. He's very much the sort of person to shrug and say "I have no problem with you. If I did, I would have said something."

And a clarification regarding Darian in ToB: I haven't put down anything in writing just yet, but Darian most likely won't be as talkative as I may have given you the impression he'll be in ToB. He most likely will be more assertive and comfortable talking to the party, but he'll never be a particularly social person. If anything, he might talk less in ToB on account of not being as wary and distrustful of the party.

I see. Thank you for the response. It's a pity, though... But maybe in later versions there will be at lest 2-3 talks with charname. We'll see what future will bring Again, thank you for your response, Tempest I hope you will be illuminated with some inspiration soon

Another very minor update - work on interjections has begun. Tree of Life and Hell dialogues complete, but God only knows how long doing other interjections will take.

Also, I've before mentioned the possibility of Darian and Mazzy having a romance music track of their own. That has been scrapped. On the off chance I write someone pressures me into writing another romance mod, I intend to save that second track for that mod's romance.

Got confirmation that K'aeloree has started work coding Darian's interjections, and that should be the last thing before beta testing.

At any rate, an extra tidbit: one of the player-initiated dialogs with Darian has a chance for Charname to talk about her experience, or lack thereof, with romance. It's inconsequential to the romance, as nothing you can say will affect it one way or the other, but Imoen will talk to Darian a bit about whatever story you chose as Charname's background.

However, a note of forewarning - I'm not entirely sure I'm going to keep the Darian-Mazzy romance. As I start coming up with ideas for what Darian's ToB material will be like, the way Darian interacts with Mazzy in SoA feels a bit off. Wouldn't feel out of place in ToB, when Darian's finally pulled his head out of his arse a bit, but as it is...

Let this be a lesson, folks: reopening projects you abandoned for the better part of two years can get... complicated, if your vision of a character and your writing style have changed in the interim.

Testing shouldn't be far off. K'aeloree had hoped to be able to start looking for testers yesterday, but that hasn't materialized. It's Christmas season, though, so I'm not really expecting any substantial work to get done.

As it is, I have started sketching out things for ToB, but nothing definite yet beyond that Darian will not get along with Sarevok at all, and that he will react, maybe extensively, to a ToB Charname-Aerie romance. He is Avariel, and will pick up on Aerie's pregnancy. And subsequently ask her what the hell she was thinking.
