I'm having a problem installing the AI enhancements portion of BP. As much as I enjoy a more challenging game, I wouldn't mind so much if I can skip that and still play TDD, SoS, TS, etc. together. So, if I don't install the AI enhancements, can I still play them together? Here's the error I get, if any of you know how to fix it:

[./override/CEFGT02.CRE] loaded, 1484 bytes
ERROR: [CEFGT02.CRE] -> [override] Patching Failed (COPY) (Invalid_argument("String.sub"))
Stopping installation because of error.

EDIT: When I open up the game it says" (i'm paraphrasing here, of course)play bg1 with totsc or bg2 with the new expansions: Tortured Souls, Shadows over Soubar, Check the Bodies, and The Darkest Day"
Does this mean that I have BP installed? Also, I installed Region of Terror. Is that supposed to show up in the expansion list also?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

A number of things here. You're a n00bie so I'll be patience and nice. But just this one time.

-- You could have done a search on that error. (Notice the emphasis on 'search'.)
It looked familiar to me, so I searched and found that it is caused when CoM Encounters mod is installed (before?) BP. So if you want to use BP, you cannot use CoM i.e. uninstall it.

-- Actually, you're question about using BP without its AI enhancements is a good one. I only learned a few months ago that, Yes, you can play BP without its AI. Just do not install the first BP component.

-- Your question "Does this mean that I have BP installed?" is scary. Are you really saying that you don't know if you've installed BP?

I have a worrisome feeling that you have installed an older version of BP, based on the description you've given. Please tell us you are using the most up-to-date versions of BP and BGT...

There are two installation guides sticked in the Mega Mod Help forum. Agreed, they are not 'Megainstall for Dummies' simple, but they provide a useful starting point. Use them to double-check that you've installed the correct mods, in the recommended order.

-- "Also, I installed Region of Terror. Is that supposed to show up in the expansion list also?"
I do not know what an "expansion list" is. Do you mean in the description you gave above, or the weidu.log?

There. A few pointers to take you from 'Totally a n00b' to 'Just a n00b'. Don't worry, we've all been there. You'll get more experienced in no time.

BP AI install is failing due to somewhere around 4 cre files placed into your game by COM_Encounters. The easiest way around this is to cut the offending cre from your override folder and put it in a safe place and keep trying to install BP until it doesn't choke on any more cres (cutting the bad ones and putting them in a safe place). After BP is installed, go ahead and copy them back into your override. Com Encounters does a lot of overwriting, however so it will also break parts of your game unless you modify the tp2 to patch files instead of overwriting them.

Ah, thank you for your responses. I've learned a sort of general overview of software features, etc., and now I'm trying to learn it more in-depth, i.e. modding, etc.

Both of your responses were very helpful, and, as I said before, I'm trying to stop being such a noob.

EDIT: And to clear a few things for you, Azazello, yes, I'm using the most recent versions of both BGT and BP. The question about whther I have BP installed was an offshoot of sorts of my original question about if it would install without the AI. I wasn't sure if the game naturally displayed the addons on the intro screenplay- if I just installed the game and and all the packs if it would read "play bg2 with the new expansions: Tortured Souls, Shadows over Soubar, Check the Bodies, and The Darkest Day," or if that was a feature of BP. By "expansion list" I mean the aforementioned "play bg2 with the new expansions: Tortured Souls, Shadows over Soubar, Check the Bodies, and The Darkest Day" message on the intro screen. Again, I am a noob, so I'm trying to figure out how much info to put in a post, and how to phrase it- I obviously didn't do too well on the original post. Hopefully, this will clear up the questions you had; however, if it doesn't more creative criticism is welcome. Also, I just now realized that this site had an IE Modding tutorials page, which I will certainly read.

Again, you have been very helpful, and I thank you.

2nd edit: Is CoM encounters more trouble than it's worth? I'm thinking that it is, judging from erebusant's declaration that "Com Encounters does a lot of overwriting, however so it will also break parts of your game unless you modify the tp2 to patch files instead of overwriting them."

You didn't do too well in your follow-up post, but at least I understand you better now.

Don't mind me, I'm working late and being snarky is part of the fun.

I would highly suggest that you NOT spend much time in the IE Modding tutorials area until you're a LOT more comfortable playing this combination. That area is supposed to be for modders (beginners and experienced), not gamers, if you understand the difference. Stick to the Mega Mod Help forum. You'll learn a lot from there.

"Is CoM encounters more trouble than it's worth?" IMO, for a beginner, Yes.

No one has yet confirmed that installing it after BP is acceptable, and I know for fact that installing it before causes major headache. If anyone has gotten a good installation with BP+CoM, they are keeping quiet, probably until a new BP is relaeased. When that will be, please do-not-ask.
