Well, Hello World!
or SHS for that matter :)

I have a few important (for me) questions here, regarding the subject.

First, why in BG2 there are no subs for PC's like in first one? I mean all those selection and command sounds, like "For battle and glory" etc.
In original Baldur's Gate every pc sounset has text lines. So why BG2 lacks them? Technical incompartibility or something? I hope not. <_<

Will someone be kind enough to explain that to me?

Well, actually I think they are there, they are just hidden. Go to the game Options screen, then Sounds, Character Sounds, and there is a Subtitles unselected, so just click it and click done, and at least Korgan had subtitles for me...

I have subtitles on. But bottom text window shows nothing, when I click on my protagonist.
And never did, at least in my game. Maybe they are no subtitles for PC to begin with?

It does in my game with subtitles on... pretty sure anyway. Maybe you're using a custom soundset that has no strings associated, only sounds?

Weird. No custom soundsets, only pre-made. No matter which soundset I pick, no strings appear.

I don't have subtitles either. All NPC's have subtitles, but any customisable character doesn't.

It must be possible to add subtitles in some way. It just feels not right.
If first game has them, the second should have too (in my opinion). So what about a little mod? I'd like more info on this topic, please :whistling:

Well, the thing here is, as you can choose the sound set for the Player Character run into problem of how to make the installation, as you actually would have to subtitle all the different sound sets individually, and one possible solution is make them all have different installer, so when installed the player has only one set subtitled, so the character says what he does with the right subs.

And then there is dozens of different downloadable custom sound sets... none of which are subtitled.

I've always wondered about this (never had subtitles for my PC too :P) but it may be solvable if we can locate the .cre file that a PC uses. I dunno if the PC even has a .cre file like the other NPCs though :P

But somehow, I remember seeing soundsets that have all subtitles in a text file in the package (probably for custom addition or sommin) :D

Cheers,

NO WAY!!! ...

Editing it right now :P

EDIT: It works :coolthumb: but it involves adding lines to your dialog.tlk. And you can have only one subtitle-set at a time, so if you use Male001 subtitles and change later to the Male002 soundset, you'll still have the Male001 subtitles until you change them yourself :D

Wish there was a way to link subtitles with soundsets  *sigh*

Well, I did tell you so.

Of course you can make an installer that removes all the other custom sound sets, and maybe even one that downloads the chosen sound set during the installation from the Internet like this does.

Which sounds (a, b, c ... 1, 2, 3 etc.) correspond to the different strings, like leader, battle cries, happy/unhappy?

Which sounds (a, b, c ... 1, 2, 3 etc.) correspond to the different strings, like leader, battle cries, happy/unhappy?

Read the ReadMe!

Custom Sound files:

The following is a list of the WAV files for the custom
sound sets. The list has been increased and modified since
Baldur's Gate, so if you already have a custom sound set you
will need to update it to match the current format. Replace
each 'XXXXXXX' in the filenames with the name of the sound
set (MAX 7 CHARACTERS in XXXXXXX, plus one character as noted
below for a total of 8 letters). All the WAV files should be
22 khz, 16 bit mono sounds.

Copy the WAV files to the Sounds directory located in the
directory that Baldur's Gate II was installed in, and then
select this sound set either in character creation or in the
"Customize" button off of the Character Record page. For
multiplayer, merely send your custom sounds to all of the
people you are playing with and have them copy them to the
Sounds directory. If you have installed the sounds to your
character in your game, everyone will hear your sounds once
they copy them into the correct directory.

XXXXXXXa.wav : Battle Cry
XXXXXXXb.wav : Becoming Leader
XXXXXXXc.wav : Tired
XXXXXXXd.wav : Bored
XXXXXXXe.wav : Badly Wounded

There is, with WeiDU. It's just a bit dodgy with setting soundclip references. Fortunately, for BG2, you could probably hardcode the lot of them, at least when it comes to the vanilla soundsets.

Well there are some hardcoded strings for the soundsets (starting at 16235) but setting text to these did nothing with subtitles on that I could see. So the other option is to mess with the CRE, but...

I've always wondered about this (never had subtitles for my PC too :P) but it may be solvable if we can locate the .cre file that a PC uses. I dunno if the PC even has a .cre file like the other NPCs though :P

EDIT: It works :coolthumb:

I always thought the PC was charbase.cre, not player1.cre. You said it worked with an edited player1.cre (which is "Peasant")? It isn't really cool to mess with charbase.cre either, but for a component like this, you're installing it at your own risk already heh.

Of course, someone would have to transcribe all the soundsets for this to have a chance of working. I did male005 and female4 (the ones I thought were hardcoded) but can't be bothered to do the rest :P.

I totally forgot about the original readme that comes with the game. :wall:

I can't seem to get it working with either file, although I'm probably just implementing the strings incorrectly. I'm copying the file to the override folder and using SAY [offset] [string]. After installation I view the edited file in NI and see the strings there, but they don't appear in the game.

Yeah, I saw pretty much the same thing. I think the engine is hardcoded to not display string subtitles for PC soundclips, so I don't know what Lollorian was smoking when he said it worked .

Well, I would use this:

SAY MORALE ~Sticking around is only going to get us killed.~
SAY HAPPY ~This group is great~
SAY UNHAPPY_ANNOYED ~You're starting to take the wrong path in morals.~
SAY UNHAPPY_SERIOUS ~I'll leave if you don?t stop!~
SAY UNHAPPY_BREAKING ~You suck, I'm outta here.~
SAY LEADER ~Yay I'm the leader!~
SAY TIRED ~I'm tired.~
SAY BORED ~I'm bored.~
SAY BATTLE_CRY1 ~TO BATTLE!~
SAY BATTLE_CRY2 ~Time to die!~
SAY BATTLE_CRY3 ~DIE NOW!~
SAY BATTLE_CRY4 ~DIE!~
SAY DAMAGE ~Ow!~
SAY DYING ~AH!~
SAY HURT ~Help me!~
SAY AREA_FOREST ~We're in a forest.~
SAY AREA_CITY ~We're in a city~
SAY AREA_DUNGEON ~We're in a dungeon.~
SAY AREA_DAY ~It's day.~
SAY AREA_NIGHT ~It's dark.~
SAY SELECT_COMMON1 ~Yeah?~
SAY SELECT_COMMON2 ~What do you need?~
SAY SELECT_COMMON3 ~Grunt.~
SAY SELECT_COMMON4 ~What?~
SAY SELECT_COMMON5 ~Yes?~
SAY SELECT_COMMON6 ~I'm listening.~
SAY SELECT_ACTION1 ~Uh huh.~
SAY SELECT_ACTION2 ~Sure.~
SAY SELECT_ACTION3 ~I'm on it.~
SAY SELECT_ACTION4 ~YAY!~
SAY SELECT_ACTION5 ~Not hard at all~
SAY SELECT_ACTION6 ~Yep~
SAY SELECT_ACTION7 ~Okay~
SAY SELECT_RARE1 ~I'm ready.~
SAY SELECT_RARE2 ~I got it.~
SAY CRITICAL_HIT ~Yeah!~
SAY CRITICAL_MISS ~Damn!~
SAY TARGET_IMMUNE ~No effect?~
SAY INVENTORY_FULL ~It's too heavy!~

And then if you wish to attach the sound files too, use the [].wav like this:
SAY MORALE ~Sticking around is only going to get us killed.~ [sound file name, 8 chars max, and no .wav extension]
Of course, the strings are probably overwritten when one chooses the sound in the character creation, but you can always trick it by removing the appropriate sound files from the sounds directory. :ermm: As you put them to the override...

Erhm.... you might wish to look at your charsnd.2da file(default), as it should modify the subtitles that are used with the sound files.
