Well I'm a bit late on this, but eh... I've got nothing against them using heavier stuff as trailer soundtracks. Just, everything considered, instead of Marilyn Manson's new crap they really should have used Raining Blood by Slayer, or, heck maybe even Bathe In Blood by Evile, to stay true to the main focus of the trailers. ^^

As for the actual soundtrack samples... Aside the theme track with the vocals, it sounds kinda bleh. It's the common as muck fantasy muzak.
It'll do fine in the background, but beyond that, for the most part I don't think it's quite up to BG 2 level.

I was thinking about how the sales figures would change if the game featured a metal soundtrack- everywhere else: -50% - Finland & Germany: +50%.

Yeah, I agree that's pretty much how things would go down! :P

I, for one, rather enjoy Inon Zur's "muck fantasy muzak", and have always greatly admired his work. I really think Aubrey Ashburn has a superb voice (that track Dragon Age Origins is an instant fave), and Inon Zur has always delivered. Each track has a distinct atmosphere, and seems to fit in flawlessly (I say seem, because I only have trailers and previews to go on). Frankly, I think it's on par with Michael Hoening's work for BG2.

Oh, I'm not saying that it'd be bad, just that except the theme track, it's non-spectacular stuff. @_@

I agree about Aubrey Ashburn's contributions, she pulled it off fantastically (pun intended). I like Zur's previous work as well, but personally I think that Hoenig is pretty hard to beat if you compare other game soundtracks to his SoA music, it's in a league of its own IMHO.

I agree. Hoenig's soundtrack achieves a great deal while being extremely simple at the same time.

I'm liking this soundtrack however. We'll see when the game arrives.

As for the metal in the trailers? In Denmark, membership of roleplaying organizations have boomed since we've shifted our PR to being more focused on the "cool" and "rock n' roll" sides of roleplaying. I'm convinced the rock n' roll thing was a genious move.

Considering the fact that we'll probably be able to change the soundtrack that's playing ingame, I foresee mods coming out with some indie metal soundtrack for the game...

I wouldn't play them. As has been noted, the metal was genious in terms of PR. I'm quite sure it would ruin immersion while in the game though ;)

Heh, I agree, but I'm sure there are some people who'd want such mods. Just think about it: BioWare draws new people in with some Marilyn Manson trailers, then those new people see that you can get some mods that let you decide what kind of music you want to hear in the game and tell their friends about DA, plus the mod option to have a new soundtrack = more customers. I think this is what the suits call a "win win".

Also, my far-fetched ideas always sound so darn logical when I haven't yet written them down. ;)

I agree with you, Archmage Silver. As much as I abhor that metal music, and as much as I think it deters from immersion, I'm willing to accept that it might have drawn some people in, and that there are some gamers who want to hack n slash their way through Darkspawn to the sound of raging guitars and the like.
So yeah, sounds logical to me. ^_^

Heh, I just noticed that BG is so deeply engraved in my soul that I wrote Bhaalspawn instead of Darkspawn....

And you're most certainly right ;)
