Right, well, here's how it is: After about a week of finding mods, reinstalling Baldur's Gate 2 multiple times with TOB, I finally thought I had a good installation. Except I can't start up a BG1 game. I can start up a BG2 game, get to Imoen, (at which point I quit), but I can't even get to the character creation screen when I hit the BG1 button. (I click on it, and then it goes to the loading screen that's usually very quick, but then gets stuck somewhere below half-way to the middle). I can't think of what could possibly do that, and I tried to avoid as many incompatibilities as possible, (after multiple failures in installation and irreversible errors), but I just don't know what would cause it. I'm sure I missed some huge incompatibility, though. Here's my WeiDu log in case you guys ask, we'll save us both time, (sorry if that seems arrogant):

I should also note that I failed a 1pp installation. Upon trying to install Thief - Unique Avatars (content patch), I can't remember what I did, except that I ended up closing the window, (big mistake), which then made WeiDu think I didn't even have the first component installed, and after trying to reinstall the first component, it couldn't even get past that, so I just skipped the entire thing, hoping my game wasn't messed up too much.

Well, because you try to have more than 2+ mods, I would suggest that you decide to turn to amateur help and use the BWS to install all the mods you wish.
Just remember to select either standard or tactical install, not the expert, as that's for bug testing. So go and download the BWS, run it and let it setup your full clean BGII - SoA + ToB game...
And make sure you use the ~'Further Installation Options' so that the BWS doesn't automatically download, extract and install everything. As that's what the setup is created to do...(download, extract and eventually install).
Further help on the multiple mod installs, read this, and that.

Now, I would first though suggest that you try to install the plain BGT v1.08(26 Nov 09), this is to check what the problem is...
So make sure you have a clean full custom install BG+BG:TotSC patched to v(1.3.)5512, and that it takes about 2.4 GB's. Next make sure you have a clean BGII - SoA + ToB full install patched to v(2.5.)26498... it should also take about the 2.5 GB's, or more if you adjust the Cache space. Then start the both games so they make autosaves after the character creation and the first cinematics.
(you might then wish to copy the entire "BGII - SoA" game folder to C:\BWS\ to shorten the time when you begin the actual BWS install...)
Then install just the BGT (to the original directory). And try to start the BG1, if it start ok, you can begin the BWS install

If it doesn't, you need to make sure you did it correctly, and then copy and package the setup-bgt.debug and setup-bgtdos.debug files to an archive like .zip, or .rar...etc. and upload them to a post.

I have a Life outside of BG so this post will not be edited further...

Hi-hi.

A Clean Install of both BG1 and BG2 is mandatory.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with your install list. You don't even need to use BWP to do the install, it's your choice. Still, get the latest BWP PDF and compare their list to your own. Modify your list as needed.

I have a Life outside of BG so this post will not be edited further...

My original plan was to actually use the BiG World Project, except that upon installing it and trying to set it up, none of the settings really made sense to me, so I then tried to manually install. After about ten Baldur's Gate 2 reinstalls, (because of a huge amount of failures), I came to you guys. I'll reinstall, (again, sigh) I really didn't want to try and use the BiG World Setup, though, because it sounded like it was going to set up mods that I may necessarily not want on its own. But you make it sound like it was suppose to do that - but there's an option for it not to. So I guess I'll try doing that again.

Thanks for the links - the backing up sounds really handy right about now, considering I'm wearing out my disks by reinstalling three times a day! My hard drive is probably fragmented to hell after all this reinstalling.

(edit) Whu...Tried uninstalling Baldur's Gate 2 - ToB worked fine, but when it got to SoA, it gave me an error message saying, "Catastrophic failure." lol

At least it removed the registry files, which is all I really needed, <_<

(edit) OH CRAP. That's what it says when I put my CD 1 into my disk drive, too.

Hmm. I guess I really DID wear out my CD's. Shoot. That's my second set of SoA CD's, too.

Awesome, just awesome. Guess I'll forget about modding for now - but I'll be back in a few days when I have some new disks from eBay, lol. But that was a week of failures just for one big massive failure, which just sucks, lol

(edit) Tried some other things - manually cleaning out registries, deleting installshield info, etc. That didn't work. I tried restarting, and my computer wouldn't boot up, (held down power button a few times) - couldn't get past motherboard screen. I unplugged my USB drive, and it zipped past the screen a second later, and installing Baldur's Gate worked when I tried.

Kind of random, don't you think? lol

If you are going to modify the game under the Vista or W7, you need to install the game anywhere else than the Program Files sub-directory... this is cause the to OS's protect the files in the sub-directories with read-only protection which mirrors the original files to there, so the original files are used even if you edit them by hand and replace them with something else. So make a "Games" directory, or what ever your language uses for the games term.

You can always install the game from CD images too.

Does this rule of thumb apply to all games, or just games Windows 7/Vista considers Legacy? So I should probably reinstall all my other Infinity Engine games, as well?

Thanks for the tip, though,

Alright, I got everything working - except that my map shows up as Baldur's Gate 2 default map, rather than the combined BG1+BG2. The only thing I can think of to do is to install World Map over everything - except that I don't like World Map because it's resolution is too big for its own good.

Unless someone can tell me which file to overwrite from the BGT folder. :P

Agreed. But there might be technical reasons for why smaller resolutions are not available.

I'm probably wrong but I think World Map is the only map mod that shows BG1 & BG2 locations.
