Happy New Year to all!

This is my first time adding 1PP to my mega mod game so I suspect this is the cause of this problem.

The problem is that some graphics from spells really slow the game.  The ones I have found so far are the orange cloud from Cloudkill, the green cloud (causes blindness) cast be Sirines, and the red flames from fireball.

The orange and green clouds last three minutes and ten seconds.  They also cause all movement to significantly slow down until the clouds disperse.  The only thing that works normally while the cloads are present is <CRTL>-T.  It does advance the time one hour, but the cloud stays and all motion is greatly slowed.

The flames that linger on bodies and equipment after the fireball is complete also slow all movement.  However, this lasts only about three seconds so it is not annoying.

Aside from 1PP (which I will never use again), are there any other mods that alter graphics?

Sirens... you do use the generalized biffing and ambient sound fix from my mega mod help FAQs.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

Hi The Imp:

Thanks for the comments.  Other than the graphics problems, the BWS created mega mod game is working extremely well.  But I still am in Baldur's Gate which usually worked well for me.

I check my settings.

A)  The cache was 1024.  I changed it to 2048.

B)  In BALDUR.ini, the settings were:

          Low Mem Sounds 1=0

          Low Mem Sounds 2=0

I changed Low Mem Sounds 2=1

C)  The frame rate was set to 60.  I changed it to 30.

D)  I always use  generalized biffing.

E)  The box for Disable All Ambient Sounds is checked.

F)  The box for No High Memory Ambient Sounds is not checked.  Should this also be turned off?

With the changes, tested Cloudkill.  It still takes 3 min 10 sec and slows the entire game movement.

I do a disk clean up and defrag every second day.  Also disable the anti-virus when I play the game.

Since this slow down affects the game, including the mouse cursor movement, I suspect something in the timing of the various "cloud" frames is messed up.  So far the other spell graphics have no effect on the game play.

Hi Lollorian:

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

I did not have "Use 3D acceleration" checked.  I checked the box and ran a test with Cloudkill.  It now works like it should.

I did not check "Use 3D acceleration" because it was an old habit from the days when I used Microsoft 98 SE.  I guess I have much better hardware today.

To The Imp, Lollorian, agb1, Fovinto, and any others that helped:

Thanks for all the great advice!!!

You got me through using BWS to install my mega mod game, fix the map marker problem, fix the slow graphics problem, and set up the BG configuration.  The result is that I can play the mega mod game without any major problems and have a lot of fun playing it.  With your explanations, it made it relatively simple to correct my poor choices and my mistakes.

One remaining issue still exists.  However, it is not the fault of BWS or the player mods.  It may be the fault of the mods that "FIX" the game.  The game crashes when I use any form of magic in a few random encounters.  These are fixed areas that I happen to pass through frequently as I never skip over areas but always walk through them all to get to other places.  The form of magic can be spells, magic missiles, magic weapons, etc.  Also it is dependent on which path you take to approach the encounter. For example in one encounter if you approach from the south the game crashes.  But if you approach the encounter from the north, there is no problem even if you use magic.  I found that cleaning up the hard drive files and defragging the hard drive sometimes fixes the problem.  This only happens in about three areas so it is on no major concern and does not interfere with the game.

There is one thing I would like to see in BWS.  When BWS resolves a conflict, it would be nice to see how the conflict is resolved.  I had a few that were resolved by add mods I did not select.  But I only found out about this when I checked the WeiDU log.  At the same time, If you remove (not have BWS resolve) one of two mods or of two components that are in conflict, you know which one is removed.

Thanks again for all the help.  BGT is great fun again.

Tom, what are the three places where your game is crashing? What is the text in the Windows error pop-up when it crashes?

Please try enabling TobEx debug logging (edit the text file BG2gamefolder\TobEx_ini\TobExCore.ini and change the lines under [Debug] to =1 instead of =0) and load a savegame from just before you enter one of the areas that crash, play until the crash, then upload your TobEx.err and TobEx.log files here for us to examine.

Hi agb1:

I have tried to reproduce the crash to get you this information, but the game does not crash now.  I cannot explain this.

I did set TobEx debug logging as you requested.  I also played the Cloakwood areas since my last crash.  Some small changes in the game.  After resting, it takes about 3-5 seconds to terminate the rest cycle and when going to another area, it also takes about 3-5 seconds longer.  Previously, the rest cycle would end in less than a second and the move would also take about a second.  I do not know if the extra data TobEx is recording does this.  But it does not interfere with the game.

I can remember two of the areas.  The place in Trade Way North is in the center of the south edge.  If you attack from the east, the game crashes.  If you attack from the north, all is well.  The place in Fire Leaf Forest top right corner at the river.  If you attack from the south, the game crashes.  If you attack from the north or west, all is well.

I also had a problem with Davaeon.  He did not drop the Key to River Plug.

From Shadow Keeper Creature Browser:  Davaeon has three items in his inventory that are not identified.  The icon looks like a box and they have the resources listed as RNDTRE10, RNDTRE22, and RNDTRE30.  Near Infinity shows the same inventory items, but says there are no such indeces. There is no key in his inventory.

From Shadow Keeper Item Browser:  The Key to River Plug has the resource listed as BGMISC83.  Near Infinity lists MISC83 and BGMISC83 ans the indeces.

After I killed Davaeon, I just added the Key to River Plug to my inventory and the all was OK.

If you attack, what exactly are you attacking ? It's important cause it could be that the creature that's facing you is oriented towards you ... so from west, it's oriented toward west, and it's the cause if it crashes the game. So is/was there a specific kind of creature that could be the one causing all this crashing ? You don't have to remember exactly what kind, just the bold part should be enough. Dwarf, Ettin, sixteen headed lizard imp riding a monkey ?

Hi All:

After trying to reproduce the crash for several hours, I posted the comments above.  I went to play the game, and within two minutes the game crashed.  This time in the third area which is the top center of Trade Way South.

The error message is "An Assertion failed in ChDataTypes.ccp at line number 1591".

Attached are the files I think you may need.

To The Imp:

Your post came up while I was writing this one.

The crashes are not specific to any one type of creature.  The last crash was with two groups of hobgoblins and I think vampire wolves.  Some of the others were with wolfweres, greater ghasts, and ghoul lords.

Tom

Just got into the same fight with two groups of hobgoblins, vampire wolves, wolves, and ghouls.  This time I went at ~45 deg angle (south) and then cast spells (took a real beating) no problems.  When I went directly east to west, the crash occurs.

ChDataTypes.cpp Line: 1591 Expression: !(x >= pBitmapInfoHeader->biWidth || x < 0 || y > pBitmapInfoHeader->biHeight || y < 0) Message: (null)

I've had this type of crash occur seemingly at random too.  Looks to be graphics related ("bitmaps").  Might be related to light maps (which are bitmaps, e.g., ar0100lm.bmp).

Pure guess -- maybe lighting effects of spells being cast by party or by enemies are interacting badly with the area light map if the spells happen to be cast in a certain direction.

My reason for speculating light maps is this thread, which has same error:  http://www.shsforums...durs-gate-city/  (I do not think your error has anything to do with Yovaneth's mod.)

Perhaps run a --change-log on AR3200LM.BMP and/or AR3200LN.BMP (LM is daytime light map and LN is night time light map).  Is the crash happening during daytime or nighttime?

Hi agb1:

The crashes are happening at nighttime.  I ran change-log on AR3200LN.BMP.  I cannot find the file change-log.txt or a folder named change-log.

Using Windows 7 Professional.  Does that cause a problem?

Attached to this post is one file:

AR3200LM.BMP - day time light map from a clean BG1 install I have

Try renaming the attached AR3200LM.bmp to AR3200LN.BMP and put it in your override.  See if it still crashes then.

This will replace the night time light map with the original day time light map.  It might look strange, but...

Hi agb1:

Since I will not be going to those areas again, I will just forget about the crashes.  I want to finish BG1 and start BG2 as that is where I always had major issues.

I did add the folder change-log to the game.  This time I did get the change-log.txt file in that folder, but they were of no value.

This is what I found in change-log.txt:

      [WeiDU.exe]   WeiDU version 23800

     Mods affecting AR3200LN:

Nothing else was in the change-log.txt file.

What did you run in the command console ? Or .bat, things. Like said in my ancient FAQ, this will make the folder, output the .txt and unpacks the in game backup files if there's more than 1:

mkdir change-log
WeiDU.exe --log nul --change-log ar3200ln.bmp >change-log/change-log.txt --out change-log

Of course the likely thing is, the files are not likely to have a editions, but come from the BG Graphics Overhaul mod itself... so it might not show up at all, cause the file is added, not edited by it.

Yes, I suspect that some of the BGGO light map bmp files are flawed, but I don't know how to validate them.
