#388147 Trying for a no-reloads run... how's this party look?

Posted by Klorox on 21 April 2008 - 04:18 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

Everytime I try for a no reloads game, it comes back to me playing a sorcerer. I'm trying to play with no mods that make the game any easier for me at all (save for inventory management... I love item stacking tweaks).

Sorcerer PC
Jaheira (romance/healer/tank)
Anomen (healer/tank)
Jan (comic relief/backup spellchucker/best thief in the game)

I figure if I can survive the lower levels, all you need is a sorcerer anyway. Anomen and Jaheira just hold off enemies while Jan can handle all of the locks and traps, while using a short bow or assisting with some spells.

Resting habits? I'm playing a Sorcerer with a high WIS! ;)

Wish Rest doesn't mix well with No Reloads :whistling:

Howcome?

By ToB the only reason you will need anyone, is for traps and Mellisan, depending on your resting habits.

No, you simply just play-through, but without ever reloading - if something fuzzes up, it does.

That is, if for example Jaheira dies in battle, you either resurrect her with few thousand gold(in game), or if she is torn to pieces, you just continue to play the game without her. And if your main char dies, you just create new char and start again.

Yep, that's it!

It makes for a much more exciting game, as you just never want to screw up.

The best I ever did was with a Gnome Cleric/Illusionist. I took him from Candlekeep in BGI to the second test in the pocket plane. He died since I wasn't prepared to be targetted during that test (and boy was I pissed). I didn't know ToB very well back then and was caught with my pants down.

#384218 The silly old man seeks much advice

Posted by Klorox on 02 April 2008 - 03:48 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

Please let me draw on the greater wisdom, intelligence, charisma, constitution, strength and dexterity of the expert gamers here at SHS. Please tell me if I have been missing out on some great BG2 experiences.

This is going to be a longish post, so here are the main points up front:

1. Does anyone play the smaller races?
2. Is it really any fun to be evil?
3. Are all the classes worth the trouble?
4. Should I try weapons I?ve never used?
5. Should I bother with spells I?ve never used?
6. Does anyone play with a mixed multiplayer-NPC party?
7. Is Cloudkill the only useful wand?
8. What are the best AI settings?

1)I do, most of the time. They're actually very powerful races. They all get bonuses to Saves vs. Spell, which is the most important save IMHO. Dwarves and Halflings also get a bonus vs. Poison. Dwarves are actually my favorite from pnp days, and can REGENERATE if you play BGI first!
2)I don't think so. Evil sucks. I like to be the hero.
3)The variety of classes adds to the game. I get a very different feel when I play different classes. I still haven't played them all.
4)Yeah, why not? It's more fun mixing stuff up!
5)See #4. I would stick to spells you know and like with a Sorcerer though.
6)Yes. Sometimes I really want a F/T and another class as my main character. 3 is the most I'd go with b/c I like banter.
7)Wands of Monster summoning rock. Fire wands are nice for Illusionists early in the game
8)I dunno. Never used the AI.

#405890 The best way to kill Malak. And everyone el...

Posted by Klorox on 17 July 2008 - 04:19 AM in KotOR Series

I think natural AC replaces the 10 most humans have as a natural. But then again, my pen & paper D&D days came to a close shortly after 3e came out.

Nitpicking here, but a 7/13 level split would give you the same number of feats, with a few extra FP's, 1 more power, and better saves.

I also just wanted to say I love this statistical breakdown crap. Part of the fun for me is creating a powerhouse. Keep it up my man!

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but it's a step in the right direction. BTW, I got it off a messageboard, so I can not guarantee it's accuracy.

#387779 The best BGII NPC poll!

Posted by Klorox on 19 April 2008 - 07:50 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

I voted for Jan, both for personality and power.

Nobody likes Keldorn or Cernd? :(

I love Keldorn power-wise, but I think he's kinda boring.

Cernd doesn't help me in power or dialogue,.

Can't believe there's so little love for poor ol' Haer'Dalis! Most excellent NPC evar!

Seriously though, I really do like H'D (my nickname for him). He's got some fun banters, was well thought-out (IMO), and is just a well put together guy. Sure, he's not too powerful, but that's fine.

My runner-ups are: Korgan (I love the vulgarity :D), Anomen (against my better judgment, I gave him a try, and realized he wasn't that bad a guy), and Minsc (who just makes the game awesome).

-Arguskos

PS. This is my first "real" post here, so I should probably say hi... so... HI!!

Hi!!

Funny, I actually hear quite often that H'D is one of the more powerful NPCs. I've never actually used him for an extended time. I should give him a try.

I voted Coran.  While I'm not a big fan of elves, I do love those Fighter/Thieves, and he's the best there is.

#379045 Tactics for taking on Joril (HoF mode)

Posted by Klorox on 27 February 2008 - 10:33 AM in Icewind Dale Series

I'm trying to think of how I'm going to handle killing him and all of his giants in HoF mode.  I plan on starting the fight with the converstation about freeing the slaves, but that's going to leave my Paladin in a world of hurt (she'll be surrounded by Frost Giants).

Another option is to position my party at the start of the cave, initiate the conversation, have my Paladin gulp a potion of invisibility (I have 1 left) and run back to the rest of the party.  I'm mostly worried about being surrounded and taken down by a mob.

Are there any better spots to hole up in?  I feel I need a "choke zone" to nail these guys.

Any other tactical advice is welcome.  TIA

#398270 Sweet little additional bonus I just realized with Scouts (KotOR1)

Posted by Klorox on 06 June 2008 - 01:49 PM in KotOR Series

Scouts start with an implant that boosts CON by +1.  Seems kinda useless, but I always used it just because I had it.

I just realized this sucker can be sold for $400!  That's a pretty darn good boost for a guy waking up on Taris with his pockets empty!

#398446 Sweet little additional bonus I just realized with Scouts (KotOR1)

Posted by Klorox on 07 June 2008 - 05:00 AM in KotOR Series

Also note that if you give the guy who's getting bullied $100, you can loot $50 each from the two bullies. :)

Or, if you don't care about the lightside bonus that early in the game, you can send him on his way, and still loot the cash! :)

#398273 Sweet little additional bonus I just realized with Scouts (KotOR1)

Posted by Klorox on 06 June 2008 - 02:09 PM in KotOR Series

I don't know about that.  If you like getting the light-side bonus, it makes it easy to afford to give the dude getting bullied $100.

You can also buy armor for Carth before he fights pretty much anybody.  And afford that Pazaak deck right away.

I find it useful.  Again, it's for an early boost.

#385837 Swashbuckler > Fighter dual

Posted by Klorox on 10 April 2008 - 03:47 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

Two questions:

1)If you dual from thief to fighter (after thief level 9 or later), does a CON over 16 help you at all, or do you never gain bonus HP from a higher CON?

2)Does the AC bonus you earned from the Swashbuckler kit still count even if you're in heavy armor? If so, you can probably get a really good AC at the cost of a few less HP.

#385886 Swashbuckler > Fighter dual

Posted by Klorox on 10 April 2008 - 08:17 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

I'm thinking of a Barbarian > Thief for some massive resistances (dual at level 16, Jan's Armor, Defender of Easthaven, That bastard sword that gives MR).

Not sure yet though.

#385593 Strange multi class combos

It's the Monk 1/Druid X that rocks. You get the WIS bonus to AC when shapeshifted.

#397706 STR enhancing stuff: what's the best out there? (KotOR I)

Posted by Klorox on 04 June 2008 - 04:27 AM in KotOR Series

I'm trying to plan out a character.  I don't know what I should aim his starting STR to be.  I plan on having a 15 or 16 probably.

I'd like to know what the best STR enhancing stuff is out there (gloves, belts, ect).

TIA

#387800 Soundset volume

I really love these, but IMHO the male soundsets are significantly lower in volume. I personally don't install the male ones for this reason.

#388229 Soundset volume

Split post from its previous location. :)

Do you find all male soundsets lower in volume compared to the female ones, even ingame?

Yep.

#399091 Somehow, I've got two of Mission's Vibroblades

How'd this bug happen?  Should I just sell one?

(I'm not supposed to have two, am I?)

#393327 Some feats questions:

Posted by Klorox on 13 May 2008 - 02:08 PM in KotOR Series

1)Critical Strike: "This feat applies only to melee weapons" -- does that include lightsabers?

2)Critical Strike: "This feat lowers defense by -5 when used" -- my defense of my opponents'?

3)Flurry & Rapid Shot: Are these really worth it? It seems like the drawbacks far outweigh the benefits.

4)Power Blast: "Adds +5 to damage, but -3 to hit" -- how come I'll use this feat and still score only 1 damage sometimes?
