Hey, I have a weird problem which isn't really game breaking but I am still curious as to what could be causing it and if there's a fix- sometimes when I enter a zone, dialogue will initiate across the map with NPCs.

Two examples where this happens reliably when I enter the zone for the first time are Larry Darryl and Darryl the kobolds in Fire Leaf Forest, as well as the two ogrillons on the Gnoll Stronghold bridge.

I enter the zone from the north in Fire Leaf Forest, and I am immediately greeted by Larry. After I exit his dialogue, Darryl (one of them) also initiates dialogue and simply says "Hi".

The scene with the ogrillons goes normally, where they demand tribute, Edwin tricks them, and they go hostile. However, it starts as soon as I enter the zone, rather than when I get within their line of sight.

Anyone know why this could be happening? It is a very strange bug.

Something orders the ogrilons to talk without them needing to be in the visual range... their script is probably a bit screwy.
Do you use the Widescreen mod ? And how many party members do you have ? Aka is the reason they start the dialog because they would be normally well within the visual range.

And if you could add the weidu.log's text content to a post, it would be appreciated, open the file with Notepad.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

Yes, I do use the widescreen mod. I have 6 party members, an imp familiar and Haiass, the wolf from the mod of the same name (he doesn't give the party line of sight, however).

This is a fairly old install so there might be newer editions of fixpack and the like, (8-13-2014 was the install date, to be exact) but I've played another full run through on this same install and another BG1->roughly to Firkraag in SoA runthrough. I don't remember having this problem during those runs, oddly enough...

Can't for the life of me remember how to add spoiler tags, so here's my full weidu log. Prepare your eyes for a wall of text.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I have edited some of my files with NI/SK, (changed item stats [ BUT NOT DESCRIPTIONS, I LEAVE DLG.TLK ALONE AT ALL COSTS!] , changed the file used to display pieces of armor to fix out-of-place paperdolls, fixed crash-causing .cre files which were dual-wielding maces and using slings in off hand or other no-nos, etc.)

I only edit relatively simple things which I am confident I know how to edit, and always keep backups in case I prove myself wrong.

I have never touched dlg.tlk because it is so easy to break, (no word-salad dialogue for me, thanks!) nor have I ever edited an area file (I have never had a reason, nor do I know what I am doing in this regard). This, as well as the fact it has just suddenly appeared on this latest play through, is why this bug doesn't make much sense to me and has aroused my curiosity.

(Triple post,  :whistling:  sue me, I don't have an account, so I can't edit  )

Another reason this bug puzzles me is that while it is very reliably reproduced in the situations I posted above, it does not apply to most other dialogues which initiate when entering line of sight.

In the very same zone as the kobold trio, Fire Leaf Forest, there is a much closer auto-initiated dialogue from Sendai and her band of "hunters".

This dialogue consistently functions normally, with dialogue only occurring when entering her immediate area.

This seems to debunk the idea which Imp suggested, which is that the widescreen mod or some other mod is causing the game to think that the line of sight is larger than it really is.

If this were the cause, wouldn't the Sendai dialogue, being extremely close to the place where I enter the map from the north, trigger as well as the Larry Darryl and Darryl dialogue which is at the completely opposite end of the map? What a perplexing problem... :WTF:

Probably TRIGGER.IDS stuff messing with See()? Do you have it in your override? (or in generalized_biffing's folder) Could you attach it please?

Probably TRIGGER.IDS stuff messing with See()?
It likely that the script starter won't have the See at the trigger, so it can then start the dialog half a map away.

If this is the case, how would I go about checking it and fixing the error (presumably adding a check for see())? I am not very (read; basically at all) adept at messing with dialogue files or scripts.

Yeah you're right - IIRC the 3 kobolds do not initiate dialogue on their own  You're supposed to click on them to chat.

I think we can drop this on BP because I have the vanilla Larry only has WTASIGHT.BCS as its script (and we all know what BP does to this particular script)

If you want to try fixing this, grab your override's (or gen_biff's) LARRY.CRE and attach it here - that will tell us what script it uses (then we can rename a vanilla WTASIGHT.BCS to that script so you can test :P)

DW2MP0GE.BCS :o (That's an SCS script)

Could you copy and rename a WTASIGHT.BCS to this and put it in your override and go to the kobolds again please?

I know this question does not belong here BUT can you please enlighten poor me what BP REALLY does to this script other than making hundreds of creatures in the game act unpredictable??? And why does it do that??? Is there any thread dealing with it?

I did this, removing the original DW2MP0GE from its biff folder and replacing it with a renamed WTASIGHT, and it did not fix the problem.

Darryl talked to me first (which is different), however Larry still talked to me afterwards. This is as soon as I enter the zone, from the complete opposite side of the map, as usual.

Exactly that - BP changes the vanilla combat scripts a lot (and I've not exactly looked at what it does - the new scripts have ~500 lines so I think you can forgive me on that one :P)

WTASIGHT is a vanilla combat script (also WDASIGHT, MAGEXX, and whatnot - but WTASIGHT is the most common script used by most BG creatures telling it what to do when something is it its sight) - BP changes most WTASIGHT instances to point to it's own scripts (usually starting with BP - it also has it's own version of WTASIGHT called BPWTASGT)

But something in BP's scripts gets totally messed up in a BWP installation and you have your unpredictable creatures and stuff (have a look at micbaldur's thread for examples of unpredictability )

As for dealing with it - micbaldur reports stuff and we make BP not patch those particular creatures... which is the most we should do short of not installing BP at all.

@Rick: Drop the renamed file into your OVERRIDE not into the biff folder :)

Tried it (the right way, this time...), still didn't fix the problem. Larry talked to me first again, though. Which is good, since I always liked Larry best.

If this makes a difference, the only WTASIGHT.BCS which turned up in my install was also in the biffing folders - it is 202 lines. May or may not be the original you are talking about. Don't have a vanilla file to compare it to, without extracting one from the original game files.

You are forgiven - I gave up myself trying to understand what somebody wanted to achieve here other than to make battles more interesting. My big mistake was to assume a vanilla combat script was a safe way to assign to the masses of minions I introduced with my own mod - now I need to revise all those creatures with probably my own (vanilla-style) combat script (sigh).

Thanks for everyone who tried to help - I have to leave now, and since this issue really isn't a major problem at all, but rather a minor inconvenience/immersion breaker, I am going to probably just live with it for the time being and hope it goes away when I do my next reinstall.

If you guys have any more possible solutions, don't hesitate to post them - I'll be glad to give them a whirl since this might work and of course help other people who may encounter the same issue as well.

I will check the thread every so often.
