Anyway, about the area stuff, even spells like Chain Contingency have no area marker or something. I really think that things look fine this way.

I think most of your original questions/problems have been answered by now, lets see:
See the post of Littiz, I couldn't have said it better. It's interesting, but I don't really see the justification for making them usable while Shapeshifted. If I can't cast level 1 spells while I'm an Iron Golem, why can I cast level 10 spells?
Volcano is the druids most powerful spell ever. It clearly damages nature, and uses its most terrible powers to deal with opponents. And since a druid is tightly connected to Nature, I thought we should point to this connection, and that the druid partially "feels" the damage he causes - even if it serves a greater good. Again, I tried to suggest players that Volcano is only used in times of the greates peril - something like Nature's Wrath, but that spell "asks" Nature to deal with the enemies in her special way .See my comment about Volcano draining a caster while Earthquake doesn't
And about the Volcano animation: I think a full-area Firestorm effect will be added in v2, as it was originally intended.
I agree, not every area effect spell should have a clear, visible effect. Unmodded BG2 uses the same logic.about the area stuff, even spells like Chain Contingency have no area marker or something. I really think that things look fine this way.
