BGII CTD on rest in Irenicus' dungeon - how to fix?

I wasn't sure where to ask about this. In the course of testing BGII - SoA with ToB installed (no patches), and with several WeiDU mods added, my party is currently in Irenicus' dungeon, in the corridor between the entrance to the Air plane and the room with the Cambions and clockwork device holding them in place. If I click the Rest button here, or anywhere else in the dungeon, the game will immediately CTD. The party hasn't yet entered the Air plane. I haven't looked at the crash report, because I don't know what it means and it's therefore of no help to me.
If anyone knows how I could troubleshoot and solve this, please let me know. I'll post the WeiDU log if that will help.
Thanks,
Eric

I'm not sure if you have to uninstall the mods then apply the patch, but thats really depending on the mod I guess, someone else might be able to better clarify that.
At any rate, providing a WeiDu log is helpful if the patch doesn't resolve the problem, would this by chance linked to the Chloe problem you reported awhile ago Eric?

To blame the Chloe mod for all my current game issues would be unfair, though the CTD on rest problem reappeared only after installing that mod. Thinking on this further, it's possible that the Chloe mod won't work properly without one or both of the game patches (SoA and/or ToB). I haven't yet mustered to motivation to try all three combinations of patches, one at a time, to see what works, but that might end up being my only hope to get the game playable with the Chloe mod.
This crash on rest happens regardless of who's in the party, so I can't blame it directly on any given mod. Deleting the area file in /cache/data doesn't help, nor does deleting anything in /tempsave.
I'm pretty much dead in the water and stumped at this point.

I would love to know that source, as that is advice that not even Bioware/Interplay would give. The reason I don't have any patches installed is that I was getting CTDs with the game before, and found the advice to not install the patches from an on-line source. The game behaved better after setting it up without the patches, though that makes no sense to me.
To me, the CtDs sound like not all of the files from your game disks are being copied, or fully so. The installation of mods may be hiding that as a cause.
Which game disk compilation do you have? How old are they? How would you rate their condition?
Are you willing/have space to setup a separate game folder? It will only have the default game files, so you can test if the game is behaving properly in its original state.

As for the physical package, it's copyright 2000 BioWare Corp. Four discs in a fold-out cardboard package. The discs themselves appear perfect and flawless to the naked eye, except for Disc 2 (figures), which shows a few tiny little marks on the data surface, but not deep or wide scratches. They're "real" discs, not burned copies.
I'll try to track down that source of advice against installing the game patches. When I first installed, I included both the SoA and ToB patches, but later I saw a comment that the SoA patch shouldn't be installed, as the ToB patch supposedly takes care of the same issues that that patch did.
I do have an install of the game plus the OS X BG2 Fixpack v4 on my external FW HD. I could possibly use that as a starting point to test one mod at a time, or else just do an eighth round of reinstalling from the ground up *L*
Before I do anything, though, I feel I need to get this patch vs. don't patch issue squared away. I'd rather not test all possible combinations myself, if I can avoid it

Any additional commentary is most welcome!
Happy gaming,
Eric

To setup the separate folder is gonna to be a bit of a process, but not too hard. Decide if you want to do it or not.
Oh yeah, I don't know how different a Mac BG install look to Wins, so let us know.
(1) Copy the entire existing game folder -- this is the one with the BGMain.exe file and all your mods inside -- to somewhere with space.
You're doing this to save your existing game, because if the problem is not due to the disks, then you can just go back to your existing game.
(2) Uninstall just BG2 (keep BG1 if you have it).
(3) Inside the original game folder, delete EVERYTHING. (Should I make the letters bolder?)
(4) Into the original game folder, Do a full install of BG2 and ToB. When that's done, install just the ToB patch.
BTW, once you've done this, you can now play two BG2 games: one from the vanilla install, and the other with the mods you had installed previously.
Now the Testing begins.
Inside the "Vanilla" folder, start the BGMain.exe (not baldur.exe)
Start a new game, use one of the default characters that comes with the game.
Go thru the whole yada-yada Irenicus/Imoen scenes.
First Test:
try to rest.
If good, then probably not a disk problem.
Just to be sure, you could jump to other maps (using control-J [it's a different keystroke on the Mac, but you know what I'm talking about]). Wlak around, rest, fight, whatever.
If you get a CtD, then let us know. Got some other tricks to try.
Second Test (only go here is all is good):
Install Chloe mod.
Start a new game, use one of the default characters that comes with the game.
Go thru the whole yada-yada Irenicus/Imoen scenes.
Try to rest.
What results you get?

Only the ToB patch is needed (not both the SoA and ToB patches).
EP: Good to have that confirmation

To setup the separate folder is gonna to be a bit of a process, but not too hard. Decide if you want to do it or not.
EP: Very easy to copy the entire game directory to another folder or HD.
EP: Instead of BGMain.exe, the Mac OS X verison calls the game program Baldur's Gate II, after ToB is installed. OK, copying it now. I'm placing it on my secondary internal HD (a slave drive that I use to hold data). Gave the folder a purple label, for easy identification.
(2) Uninstall just BG2 (keep BG1 if you have it).
EP: All it takes to uninstall it is to send the directory to the Trash, and empty the Trash. I do have BGI - ToSC, but it's the OS 9 version, and I lost the discs several years ago, so I don't think it's usable anymore. Or, I could delete the contents of said game folder, and leave the empty folder there. Looks like that's the way I should go. OK.
(3) Inside the original game folder, delete EVERYTHING. (Should I make the letters bolder?)
EP: Handled under item #2 above.
(4) Into the original game folder, Do a full install of BG2 and ToB. When that's done, install just the ToB patch.
EP: Takes some time. Here goes...doing a maximum install now. Funny how Disc 1 doesn't give any options, but only does an "easy install," and the same goes for the ToB disc, but Discs 2 - 4 let me choose a maximum install. Just an observation.
BTW, once you've done this, you can now play two BG2 games: one from the vanilla install, and the other with the mods you had installed previously.
EP: Sure, but I suspect that any play from the copied install with all the mods would have the same problems as before. I also just realized that I could have dropped the game directory into my user account's Applications folder, but I don't put anything there. Maybe that will be an option for future testing. No, wait...I'll copy the new, clean install of the game there, just after applying the ToB 2.1.2 patch. That'll be my true back-up of the game

Now the Testing begins.
Inside the "Vanilla" folder, start the BGMain.exe (not baldur.exe)
Start a new game, use one of the default characters that comes with the game.
Go thru the whole yada-yada Irenicus/Imoen scenes.
EP: OK, and I haven't done anything with BGConfig, just to keep everything to defaults.
First Test:
try to rest.
EP: CTD as soon as new game starts loading, after accepting character! Assertion failed at line 6389. This is exactly what prompted me to seek help, and to find that NOT installing the patches eliminates this error.
If good, then probably not a disk problem.
Just to be sure, you could jump to other maps (using control-J [it's a different keystroke on the Mac, but you know what I'm talking about]). Walk around, rest, fight, whatever.
EP: Yeah, it's either cmd-J or opt-J, I don't recall which, but it's written down somewhere *L* That just requires enabling cheat keys in the CLUAConsole. No problem.
If you get a CtD, then let us know. Got some other tricks to try.
[snip]
EP: OK, there's my CTD. I'll save a copy of the crash report as a text file, in case it becomes useful. It will tell in which thread the crash occured, and show the details, but none of that means anything to me. What should I try next?
Thanks,

I tested in a multiplayer game when this happened.
If I try a single-player game, I can create a character, the game loads, Irenicus has his fun with the main character and leaves, Imoen enters and talks with the main character. At the end of their exchange, when the game normally pauses and saves, instead I get a CTD. This time, the error message says Saved game failed. Do you want to continue?
That's where things stand now. I hope there's still a good solution!
Thanks,
Eric

So, now I'm wondering if some component of the Fixpack corrects the problem that makes the game crash. I don't want to complicate matters further, though, so I'll maintain focus on my "main" game install. At the same time, I'll make a new copy of the game with the Fixpack, and add mods to the new copy, playtesting as I go. I'm pretty sure I have the order for installing mods down now, doing NPCs first after the Fixpack, then Crossmod Banter, then kits, then SP Collection, and finally tbtweaks and BG2 Tweaks (in that order). I hope that's all correct, anyway

What seems to be wrong is that area1100 and area110a are listed as being on CD3 instead of CD4.

When I first got the game, I applied both the SoA and the ToB patches, not knowing any better. I imported characters from BG1 - ToSC, as I'd finished that game previously, to a friend's SoA game on his PC. I saved the characters and brought 'em into ToB, and began playing SoA games with this new install. Aside from a random crash here or there, the game ran as it should. The only mod I'd used on the PC side was Solaufien, but I hadn't applied the mod on my own game. Then I discovered, and began installing, all sorts of mods. Things still ran well for a while, but then I started getting these assertion failures and crashes on rest...and then there was the whole Chloe mess, which also has yet to be resolved.
Not one of the suggestions I've seen so far has corrected the problem, but this is still in progress, so I remain hopeful. I really would like to know precisely what InfGame.cpp is, what it's trying to do when it encounters the failure, and what's supposed to happen at that point. Perhaps the fix lies somewhere in that knowledge, but then again, perhaps not, as I'm not a programmer.
When I play in multiplayer mode, I'm off-line, as the only reason I do this is to bring in additional characters besides the protagonist, or to create a few new characters in one go, then give them their own games later on.
So, I've copied the two area files (1100 and 110A) from the CD 4 Data folder to the CD 3 Data folder, but I still get crashes exactly the same as before. What I've done that will be helpful was to create a new folder inside the main game directory, name it "back-up", and copy the game program, the baldur.ini file, chitin.key, and the entire Override folder, so I can always restore these if needed. My install remains as SoA maximum install + ToB + ToB patch v.2.1.2 (latest patch as of this writing). I put a copy of Install-tools inside the game directory for future use, as I use Install-mod.sh to, well, install mods

Please keep the information flowing, as this issue and the eventual solution will likely benefit other Mac OS X users besides myself. I considered installing the game under OS 9, but my instincts tell me that it will run better under OS X.
Thanks,
Eric

These sound like two separate problems. For the crash-on-save, have you disabled Spotlight on the BG directory? It apparently likes to scribble its files into directories where new files are being created, which causes BG to CTD. Also, make sure that "temp", "tempsave" and "save" are folders. For the CTD-before-start, I always get a CTD "File Exception Err 1" the first time I run the program, but it works afterward. Be sure to clear out any files in the "cache" folder whenever you install or uninstall a mod. For the crash-on-rest-in-CI, that may also be a problem with Imoen as well since she starts a dialog ("How can you sleep here?").... The "Assertion failed in InfGame.cpp in line 6389" happens when the game tries to save itself just after the initial conversation with Imoen, when in multiplayer mode. In a single-player game, I can't even get to the opening scenes, as the CTD occurs before the game gets all the way loaded.
Update: I started a multiplayer game and it's running normally except for having two Imoen's at the beginning (but that may be because of the NEJ mod). But afterwards, I kept getting the CTD File Exception when I restarted. I ended up having to duplicate the Baldur's Gate II executable and running that to get it going again. I'm assuming that the Finder is the culprit here by not setting up the execution environment correctly.
What Chloe mess?...and then there was the whole Chloe mess, which also has yet to be resolved.
I assume that's the name of a C++ source file, probably means Infinity Game Engine, probably during initialization and setting itself up to run the BG2 data files. Since the only ones that have the source aren't supporting the game anymore, the messages are useless except to tag forum messages so they can be found with Google (insert ironic smiley here).I really would like to know precisely what InfGame.cpp is, ...
I also. I keep a virgin full install as "BGII initial" and duplicate that to install mods and play. It's 3GB of extra space, but since my 2 year old computer came with a 250GB disk, ...So, I've copied the two area files (1100 and 110A) from the CD 4 Data folder to the CD 3 Data folder, but I still get crashes exactly the same as before. What I've done that will be helpful was to create a new folder inside the main game directory, name it "back-up", and copy the game program, the baldur.ini file, chitin.key, and the entire Override folder, so I can always restore these if needed. I'm sure you already know this but Install-mod only works with PC distributions. Mods that have already been converted to Macs should be installed with their xxx.command .I put a copy of Install-tools inside the game directory for future use, as I use Install-mod.sh to, well, install mods

One thing about converting and installing mods that's a PITA is that the audio files aren't always converted from .ogg to .wav, and BGII reads .wav files. So, in those cases, I have to use a utility to convert the audio files, then drop 'em into the override folder.
And now, it's happy gaming!

You need to manually move all the files in the Mac-ized mod's directory into your BG folder before double-clicking the .command file. If it then gives an Open Command File error, it needs to be set to executable (open a Terminal window, type "chmod +x ", drag-and-drop the .command into the window, then press RETURN).Interesting you should say that. My experience is exactly the opposite! Double-clicking any .command file for a mod fails 100% of the time on my system, ...
Yes, that's exactly how Install-mod will fail with a Mac-ized mod. The batch files won't be run to do any of the conversions since there are no .BAT files in the distribution, but WeiDU will register that the mod is installed. Any Mac-ized mod that adds new areas will silently fail but cause BG to crash. By the way, the only Mac-ized mods I use are the MacTutu group and OSX-1pp_v2_remix. With devSin going MIA the number of up-to-date Mac-ized mods are decreasing. One thing about converting and installing mods that's a PITA is that the audio files aren't always converted from .ogg to .wav, and BGII reads .wav files...
P.S.- As an addendum to my previous post, another reason BG will crash is if there are more than 100 songs in override/songlist.2da . I noticed that you have several NPC mods loaded and they're the ones that add songs.

As for the songs, I haven't heard any of them yet, though the NPC mods deliver their sounds audibly (both those that are soundsets, and go in the sounds folder, and those that go in the override folder). I do have a lot of NPC mods installed, but I do plan to use all of them.
The Saerileth mod adds areas (other-planar, at that!), but I haven't experienced any difficulties with those...yet *fingers crossed).
Happy gaming,
