Good plan!

#262987 Are you still playing Icewind Dale series?

Posted by jester on 31 August 2006 - 09:16 AM in Icewind Dale Series

I agree with the quest counter idea. It is much better than a timer. Basically the idea is to make it impossible to solve all quests in one setup. As for sidequest: Arcanum did not have that many sidequests, but the real world feeling of encountering stuff by simply heading in one direction was a quantum leap from the shopping list approach.

Also there should be downsides to accepting quests. I liked the approach ToEE took as stuff you did for Hommlet make someogf the people in Nulb like you less. Imagine you promised to save Nalia's keep then have a good nights sleep and some nice company. Lets say there was a quest counter and you did much of the other stuff. After a couple of weeks or days skulking about in Athkatla you meet an enraged Nalia again. This time the blame is on everybody, your party included. Sadly BG2 doesn't have an evil path so the example for the opposite isn't possible,but you get my idea.
In Fallout you could do a lot of things the way you wanted to, but every action (Perhaps apart from that thing you did with the goat and nobody was watching. 'Turn around Sulik! I am having a private moment here.') had a reaction of sorts. I would like more of that.

Now some actions should endear you more to questgivers than others. In this respect tying it to quests might be a lot nicer than alignment which is mostly hard to play anyway. Don't think duality. Think you win a big fight against a bad guy and everybody knows it. This heightens your chance to be approached for the next brawling project, but lessens it perhaps for a diplomatic or sneaky quest.

A solution for the feeling that the world seemingly revolves around you would be to use a timer with each quest. Even day/night would be more fun. I can wait for ages and the druids still wait for their turn to attack Trademeet. When two imminent dangers are happening at once you should atleast be able to miss out on one.

Also interesting would be some RPing options that let you fubar some quests or get an easy solution without knowing the connections.  You where nice to the beggars and as it turns out some of them now a secret entrance past the big bad guards or giving up one reward might alter the course of another quest later and so forth, but I agree that pure item collection is boring.

So you switched your computer off entirely?

@...how it comes that some lesser monster in the beginning of the game gives 500 exp and then much later in the game we get 500 exp for the white dragon ?

Well, depending on your skills and level, challenge diminishes and thus the reward for besting your nth monster of the same variety in a row. I bet Buffy doesn't get XP at all by now. ::)

@stats that matter
I know it is all the same old story to some, but I think I know only a single game where stats really mattered somewhat, but then again I used run around almost naked. So equipment was largely off the table.

Just make sure your powergamer toys drop their equipment. Otherwise Ctr+Ying them will be no fun.

Isn't trolling what coffeeplace is meant for?

@unsupported tools/Captn Immortality: If some tool, say a wrench, is broken it is all well and good to display it as a 'legacy wrench', but if it is useless, don't put it where people might use it without the chance of proper warning.

A site without links which just said:

Hey, sort of invented a bike or something like it back then, but it didn't fly, but still was sorta cool back then.....etc.

@personal preferences:
I found IEEP a lot easier to work with than DLTCP or whatsitsname, but I have been told that this program covers a lot more options than the former.

@Drew: Sim/Ken dissimilarities:

Sim hardly has the powarz that Ken had at his forum, but, I agree, that he invites comments and suggestions in numerous ways.

Did anybody mention show length? :-P

Apart from that I think this idea has some potrential. Even a conference call with a lot of interviewees. What technology are you using to connect to others? Skype or something completely different.

I think accessibility is a major contributor to forum growth, if that is what you are after. Back in the days I knew of one single site which modded the IE, now you have several very successful models to choose from. Each with their own flavour and focus, despite the fact that I seemingly always run into the same names wherever I go.

Back in the old days compatability was not that big and, frankly, it could be said that it did not seem that necessary. Now, if you look at Weidu logs posted together with questions, people seem to approve of methods to have everything and the kitswitcher installed at once.

The special focus that BG (like no other CRPG before it and not that many after) has on NPC/NPC/PC interaction open the path IMO to the lasting success of this game. I would therefore claim that the NPC-mod is actually the mainstay of IE modding togheter with kits, banters, romances, flirts and some gruesome stuff which luckily never got finished.

@guest posting: I always stand by my insults. That is why you can count on the 'jester'-tag.

Also I would like to introduce the idea of a quick round of applause for everybody who tried their hardest and bravely soldiered on even when the lights of Valinor where fading.

So the faithfull gathered, not waivering in their staunch defiance and recited the gospel during their long dark vigil:
'Look to my coming, at first light, on the nth year. At dawn, look to the East.'

Alas, the time of reckoning is at hand.

IIRC TeamBG should be largely remembered for its unfriendly/unhelpful attitude towards newcomers and the lack of guest posting. Forum policies and tools have evolved in various ways. Not to the complete dismay of many people affected by both.

I think the advantages of the available tools are widely known for those who care. As much as I like witty provocation, I doubt a mere 'IDU sucks' will cut it, but preaching to the choir is a fav pastime for those fed up with their games already.

Different approaches merit different fora. What the heck, even different shoesizes seem to merit different fora, blogs, tags, youtube-entries and everything else nowadays. :-P

Kirinhale is the succubus you encounter in Durlag's tower IIRC.
