So basically I thought it would be fun to pick this up again. Now I'm beginning to think it isn't worth the headache. First I can't get passed step 1 of creating a dialogue, which would be changing the directory in command prompt which I can't figure out. I'm using Vista Ultimate and here's what my CMD looks like: C:\Users\Joe>... I then type goto\Desktop\SoA+ToB. Now I'm not exactly a computer genius but I can take a good guess and figure it out on my own usually. Also keep in mind this game is not in stores any longer, so I am mounting .ISO files to play and test this stuff out on.

I'm reading this WeiDU README and like I said I can't get passed step 3, which seems simple enough. Especially considering I made my own basic NPCs with dialogue and banter. I actually remember creating them in about 30 minutes, writing the scripts, changing from CHR>CRE, and seeing my creation in game and thinking to myself how cool it was. I remember one link a guy gave me here last time I asked for a link on how to Mod IE games and it was a great tutorial; simple, in-depth, and even big effing letters. I went back to that post and unfortunately I can't go to the link he posted for some reason. I was using Shadowkeeper and WeiDU to make those NPCs and had very little trouble with the basics.

MMhmmm that would be the one I was talking about with big effing letters that I couldn't find lol.

Yea, thanks for the quick reply again. I know that they take a lot of nitty, gritty work but right now I'm really just looking for the basics. Dialogues, fights, and all the cool stuff comes later obviously.

First that guide is so much easier to use than the one I was looking at. Now what are these.tp2 files and how do I actually save/create them? I know what they're used for and how to run them, but I am at a complete loss creating one. I open my wordpad/notepad and make my header, copy files (CRE, AR, and Join Party). Everything is coded correctly, so what am I missing (Setup_Jim.Exe.TP2 Not Found, is what is showing up in my CMD.) ? Are they automatically created when you run the .exe? Or is it something so simple I could leap off a cliff when I find out? Hell I even tried editing a current .Tp2 file in my text editor only to see it turn into a standard text document when I save it.

I'm reading Kat Bella's tutorial and she drops .Tp2s like it's no big deal, and just kind of assumes you know what they are. Not even the slightest clue to help if you can't save it correctly. I have a lot of the basics nailed down (except one), but I might as well just be writing my name a million times in these scripts if I can't install the mods to test them.

Keep in mind my scripts are small and blocks of dialogue are extremely short, so it is extremely easy to single out mistakes.

Yea know I have a file that reads "Setup-Jimbo.tp2.txt". Hooray for the internet and its vast amount of information, but complete disregard for something so simple like changing the actual type of a file not the programs. Not directing it towards you, you at least tried, but there is nothing useful on the internet that pertains to this. Absolutely ridiculous if you ask me... I installed 3 different text editors none of them able to save a file as .Tp2. I am using Windows Vista so I can't just scroll over and type unfortunately.

FATAL ERROR: Failure("Unable to find DIALOG.TLK")

FATAL ERROR: Failure("not a valid TLK file (wrong sig)")

I can clearly read between the lines but not the root of the problem. The second error occurred once I created a dialog.tlk along with the starting dialogue; talk1, talk2, and joining the party (very simple right?) I have even copied and pasted her dummy guide to see if I did miss something, but I get the same errors. SOMEONE HELP AAAAAH! It's so frustrating something so simple is doing this to me.

I'm also unable to find the correct file for the Script Override... J@Jimbo is what I would be looking for and its alla bunch of .bcs files. I know it seems I'm looking to have all this handed to me, but it couldn't be further from the truth. I want to do this. I just need to spend a little more time in the shallow end and then take the plunge. Not being able to even see my creation is pretty demoralizing (and holding me back considerably), but I'm still trying to figure it out.

Well I have my SoA+ToB folder on my desktop because I use Vista, and I have it saved there. I went ahead and did the her dummy version as a mod. The file looks like C:\\Users\Joe\Desktop\SoA+ToB\K#John. Which has K#John has a copied WeiDU renamed Setup-John.exe, the CRE file(.CRE), my dialogue(.D), area file (.BAF), and the TP2 file(copied from her site word for word).

Nowhere in the tutorial does it say I need a dialog.tlk file. I just figured it would be worth a try. I guess I'll just go for a completely new install when I get home from work. Keep in mind I am using a downloaded torrent version of the game to play and mod (I made a few NPCs before so I know it's possible).

If you're going to read a tutorial, then *read* it. I'm going to take a guess and say that you either skimmed over it or just tried to copy and paste without actually understanding what you were doing. Either way, that's a crappy way to learn how to do anything. Also, out of curiosity, are you using the old PDF or HTML version of my tutorial or the new guide?

From the old guide:

2) Open up your text editor and save the file as "all files" type and in the box where you name

1) Go ahead and open up a new text editor document and once again, save as "all files" type and save as "AR0406.baf" without the quotes of course...because AR means "area" and 0406 is the number of the Copper Coronet.

From the beginning of the guide where it lists the definitions and explains what the file types are.

Tp2: A file that tells WeiDU what to install in your mod and where.

From the actual step in the tutorial.

3) Now open up yet another new text file and save it as Setup-John.tp2 This will be what tells
WeiDU what to install.

Next..from the new guide:
-

"This is going to be a dialogue file (D File), so we're going to save it as "All Files" and name it. "

-

"Open up a new file in your text editor and save it as "all files" just like last time. Name it "AR0406.baf"."

Since we can see here that WeiDU has special file types, it's safe to assume that by that Tp2 step, the reader of the tutorial has gained understanding that he/she will have to use the "Save As All File" step one more time for this type of file.

Also, in regards to understanding what the files actually do:

- The Tp2 is a very important file. It tells WeiDU what to install in our mod.

You need to make sure that you have a folder labeled myMod or whatever your mod name is. Your tp2 file should be something like setup-myMod with the tp2 extension/file type. You can stick your d, cre, baf, and tp2 file in this myMod folder (make sure you actually name this folder and not call it "myMod").

Next, have your copy of WeiDU.exe renamed to setup-MyMod (it will have an exe extension).

The newly renamed WeiDU.exe and your myMod folder should go into your BG2 directory...which is wherever Baldur's Gate II is installed. The dialog.tlk file is in this BG2 directory....WeiDU is giving you an error probably because you do not have your mod folder and setup-myMod.exe in the BG2 directory.

I made a few NPCs before so I know it's possible

If this is the case, why don't you just refer to those files?

Finally...everywhere in the tutorial/guide I have my name listed with an email address to contact me. If you were having so much trouble, why didn't you just PM or email the author of the guide?

IDK maybe it's just the way and where I have to install makes it a bit different. I made a new Jimbo going along with your new guide, a fresh install, and no other mods. I still got that FATAL ERROR where it says I'm missing the dialog.tlk file, so I just copied the one already in the folder and that worked. I don't know if that will affect me sharing future mods in case I ever create a decent one.

Thanks to both of you for helping me through this. I love seeing Jimbo in my group =].
