I really loved the Big World Setup when I did my first modding attempt at Baldur's Gate. It was easy to customize what you wanted, as well as select what mods you needed. And now it's fallen into disuse.
I would love to see the BWS get brought back to life and usable again, as it will probally help noobs and allow for very easy customization and automation of the install process. Who's with me?

A new version of BWS is already in the works, but it takes time to implement all dependencies.

I would love to help with that if I can, espically with translating to English. Just that I'd have to be forced to use a automatic translator...
As for Shadowtek's request, yes, I will be a member soon, just need the time for it.

Data has written into database
Data can be exported so BWS can use it
Some is currently writing the webfrontend so people can edit it
That will take some time
So a way to distribute current data by a community is hopefully on its way.

I would much appreciate it if they would realase relativly soon, IMO. The sooner, the better. This is one of the most noob-friendly and automated solutions I've seen.

I now know what I at least want to do with the setup. A guy named Zeracles PMed me about his special XML schema that his download tool is using, and I think I'll probally canabalize it in the future for my purpourses and such.
I also have some key things I want to do with the setup:
- Port to Java, for cross-platform support (I plan to eventually do working installs on Linux)
- Add a new catagory - Not Reccomended mods, for mods that I would recommend people not to install, unless they want to have a bad expirence (eg: Sarelith and Imoen Romance)
- On the server side of things, implement a script that automatically generates a XML version of the linklist, with links, descriptions, my notes, and everything.
Here is Zera's schema. I'm on a vacation now, so I won't have many details on what I want to do - but ya all never know...

It's a truckload of work -- well, at least it depends on what you want to do.
If you know java so it works on all platforms and you don't have extra work, it's cool, but how many geeks and fanboys are there that want to play that game using mac or linux? I mean: You can do what you want, it's your time, but I considering the number of posts I remember, it's a mere handful.
And if you want to code it in java to do so, you'll have to parse/replace the installpack and then it's going to be really some work since you got to know components and when to install what and so on. Maybe you want to insert some more stuff like I did in the beta/9.10 and you're in for some more.
Umn, well, how do I sum it up... I hope you got something that works and you're fine with before you throw it all away because the problems that come up with the time get too annoying. Good luck.

I'm not going to make my own link list - I'm going to use the one on that German form. I just need to implment the XML schema first, and help with creating a PHP script that creates a XML version of the linklist.
It will probally take a while to create it, as I have to do it in my freetime, and considering school, there's not a whole ot of it.

It would solve a shedload of issues...
However just be careful that good intentions don't come back to haunt you...

I have completed installs using the manual download way and the BWS way... The BWS way was a lot quicker... but it was quicker because dabus put in a lot of work... A HELL OF A LOT!
Why can't spellhold do a grouping of some mods?
The one day pcs for instance have not changed for ages... can't they be grouped into one file?
IA lob all there files into one?
A bigg in a box (well zip or 7z...) all his mods altogether?
I am aware that this is possibly not done because of updating, you will get a group of mods all out of date because one has changed... but are there mods out there that are now perfected, or perhaps I should rephrase that as, will not be changed again?
It may make a future BWS easier and manual downloading easier. Please reply and call me an idiot if you disagree...

That does sound like a great idea - I think I may make some efficenty packs:Why can't spellhold do a grouping of some mods?

Kelsey-All (Kelsey SOA and TOB in a extrraction friendly format, with GroA as a optional componet)
1day (all 1 day NPCS hosted on PPG and SHS, with the execption of the BG1 1days)
WeiMods (Item Upgrade, Underrepresented Items, Valen, Sola, Tactics, the mods that Weimer have created)
BiggHouse (tweaks and questpack, also that one NPC he made)
InfinityAnims-full (all Infinity animations)
1pp-all (1pp 2.70 with avatar fixes, theifs galore, and female dwarfs)
All of them will have WeiDU scripting to select which mods you want to install (so you can pick and choose).
Eg: For Kelsey-All, I will have componets for installing Kelsey-SOA content, Kelsey-TOB content, Sola/Ascension crossmod, and GRoA as a optional componet.
What do you think of all of this?

Well, the BiG World Setup had that covered by copying the needed files to where it needs and the removing the installed mod content with a single action, so it's easy doable. To forth and back.Interesting - is it possible to invent some separate mod's deinstallation routine for the installer. Modern PC will certainly allow keeping every version of dialog.tlk
And waiting for the game to start the first 20 minutes, and worsening the lag problems a 1000 times, no thanks !and playing BG without biffing?
You do understand that the engine is still being made ? And one's it's done, the mods that it will be running will be of different sort a bit.Has anyone tried GemRB with Big World?

btw There was a similar attempt of automating a lot of the mod-install process, take a look at it and see if there's any ideas there that might be of use:
What is IEMI?Working together with SMM, the Infinity Engine Mod List & Installer (IEMI) allows for the creation of a customized install list (via a XML file) that is used within SMM.
- The Standard MegaMod (SMM) Auto-Installation by bigmoshi:
NOTE: Support of SMM by its creator is currently on-hold due to Real Life commitments.
If you are interested in providing such support, please make your intentions known within the SMM threads.
The goal of the SMM package is to help players avoid having to do any testing or bugfixing in order to get a MegaInstall up and running. Includes an auto-download & auto-installation process, a walk-thru of the package, and other numerous documentation.
...It is hoped that such a standard fuss-free installation...will help most mod-newbies just looking for a good time.

Something similar was already attempted in the early days of BiG World--and got many modders out en masse with torches and pitchforks, nearly ruined BWP!Why can't spellhold do a grouping of some mods?

Most mod developers do not want their content redesigned or redistributed without their consent. And believe me, you'll get very few who will consent.
You have to respect that if players go back to the respective mod's forum for support and advice, it'll be difficult for the developer to untangle what's a problem due to the mod's content, and which are due to being bundled in BWP.

I think I'll look into that to get ideas from it... Maybe I could make a walkthough or something? I can also help with enhancing the linklist to be like the IEMI.I'm glad see discussions on expanding BWS. I wish you the best.

Right.. I'm not opening that can of worms. Not unles the mod makers agree with that, which they probally won't.
