I am working on a half-orc portrait, and I am trying to make it decent, but it still does not look good. I will be greatfull for any tips to improve quality, and any ideas as to what is off:

the face it self looks good just a bit blury just under the eye portion.
the arms are a bit blury too .you might want to try a sharpen tool (it rarely works out but who knows). after that use a soften tool over the most rough areas.
I would think that the armor area would just have to be redone. find a texture that you like and size correctly then paint it on. you can rotate your texture and add light and shadow to give it some deepth.
and lastly the blond flowing hair on an orc? I always see them as bald, short croped hair, or long hair but pulled back in a ponytail and dark hair. but that is just me.
I am glad to see that you are getting more in to graphics.

Here is a good place that has group textures for easy download.

Cool, thank you. The arms are tripple-sharpened (it's from the IWD old portrait), and then I tried to work on it with the smudge tool, but I am afraid to lose the 'knotted' look).

I'd try to add a different armour-neck set, probably abandoning the IWD picture all together for something with better res.

I'd like her to have dark hair, but I think they will not look good on the portrait, losing the definition. I will try to shorten or spike them though.

the hair is much better!. It is easy to over do the smudge tool thats why I use the soften brush it does not push the colors around just blends them a bit. also if you do not use it on the whole arm just certain parts (leaving the bumpy parts) it is, as you now know, difficult to enlarge a pic. always easier to shrink one. ;)
I just added some light and shadow to the armor to give it some shine and some deepth. onlyusing the lighten and darken tool (psp) I did not do a real good job of it but you get the idea.
opacity and hardness are always good to play around with.

OMG, this is really cool! I am going to try playing with it tonight - it looks waaaay better, and I am dying to see how the full suit would look like! What PSP stands for? Photoshop (that's the only advanced editing program that I have)?

when I use psp I mean paint shop pro, I use ps for photo shop. I can only give real advice in psp 'cause that is what I have :). But the good news is that photoshop is a better program (*cough I personaly do not see it but I might be jaded against Adobe products)

there is (or should be) a warp tool/brush that can make an effect that pulls things toward you i.e. a flat item could be bubbled up. this however (in psp) is not something you should try on something you like use a test/copy. I have crashed psp doing it then trying to undo it.

OK, the latest attempt. I have not quite figured out how to do the bright patterns, but I found the 'volumizing' tools - in the liquify filters. :) Something tells me to stop abusing this portrait... at least for a while!

That is an unusual edit of half-orc,
very nice and raw.
He looks like Keith Richards, 20 years ago.

Thank you, I will definetly experiment some more with this one, since there are a bunch of things I don't like yet (though I doubt I can do as lovely work as Herd does). It's actually 'she-orc', and I need the plate to be shiny on this one, because she is a knight's squire. :)
